College Basketball Betting Free Play: UNC Asheville at USC Trojans

UNC Asheville +16.5 at USC O/U 152
Recommendation: UNC Asheville

Sometimes, power ratings, pointspreads, and matchups don't mean a thing in these secondary tournaments. Two of the biggest factors come down to travel and motivation. Both factors are pulling against one another in tonight's UNC-Asheville-USC matchup. The Bulldogs, who won the Big South regular season, will make the cross country trek to Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Trojans were arguably the most deserving team to not get into the NCAA Tournament and are justifiably upset.

“The feeling is the same,’ Enfield said of frustration held over from Sunday’s bracket reveal. “It doesn’t go away in a day. Because we should be in the NCAA Tournament. We deserve to be, and we’re one of the best at-large teams out there.”

Enfield went as far as to say he may sit players who are not 100 percent healthy and/or could risk injury and thus damage their stock as a pro prospect. And by all accounts, if it was up to Enfield and his players, they would have passed on the NIT bid. USC is talented enough to beat Asheville Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona State Sun Devils

USC at Arizona State
Saturday, 7:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: USC -3 O/U 58
CRIS Current: USC -3.5 O/U 59
Recommendation: USC

Arizona State is one of the most interesting teams in college football. One one hand you have a team with three outright wins at double-digit underdogs. On the other hand, a statistical profile that is downright ugly. Despite their 4-3 overall, 3-1 PAC-12 records, the Sun Devils have been outgained by nearly a full yard per play (6.19 ypp allowed, 5.22 ypp gained) this season. And you can also make a case that a majority of ASU's opponents were later discovered to be overrated. San Diego State has recently been exposed as has Texas Tech. Since losing in Tempe, Oregon has dropped three of four; albeit with a backup quarterback. Washington was clearly living off last year's accomplishments and an ultra-soft schedule and Utah has been dealing with a lack of stability at the quarterback position. To call ASU a complete "fraud" is probably too harsh, but I have a hard time buying into this squad despite a handful of at-the-time impressive Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Stanford Cardinal at USC Trojans

Stanford at USC
Saturday, 5:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: USC

Key early season conference tilt in the PAC-12 with Stanford heading to USC. The Cardinal got the better of the Trojans last season, 27-10, in a similar conference opener setting. The results should reverse on Saturday as Stanford has the dubious task of coming in off of what I believe to be an unproductive bye week after opening the season with a 62-7 blowout win in Australia over weakling Rice. Last season, Stanford opened with a win over Kansas State, had a bye week, and they dispatched the Trojans in Palo Alto. While that appears similar situation-wise, there are some distinct differences. For one, Stanford never left campus. Their win over Kansas State was at home, followed by a bye, and then another home game vs. USC. And the Wildcats served as a "real" opponent, one that no doubt helped better prepare Stanford for its looming matchup against the Trojans. There was no resistance whatsoever in Week 1 as Rice grades out as one of the worst Read more

College Football Gambling: USC says it isn't looking past Western Michigan

08.29.2017     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
After weathering the storm of a 1-3 SU/ATS start, USC finished last season with nine straight wins; seven of which covered the number. The Trojans won't start 1-3 this season with three of four at home including Week 1's opener vs. Western Michigan. Head coach Clay Helton though isn't taking any chances. Despite playing host to Stanford in Week 2 and then Texas in Week 3, Helton sounds as if he's hellbent on crushing everyone. The betting markets are on board with that concept: USC opened -23.5 over WMU and was bet up to -27.

Appearing on CBS Sports Radio last week, Helton noted that toward the end of last season, “everybody was talking about us at the end of the year, ‘Oh yeah, you’re probably one of the best four teams. Maybe you were a playoff team.’

“Well, the reality is we were a three-loss team, and that’s not going to get you into the playoffs,” Helton said. “What we learned as a team and as a football family is every dang game counts.”

College Football Betting: Bettors with multiple opportunities to fade teams off of emotional games

11.14.2016     09:33 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
If you like betting against college football teams off of "big" games, this is the week for you.

Last Week: Lost to Pitt, 43-32. Tigers' first loss of the season. Despite loss, still with a chance to reach the playoffs.
This Week: -21.5 at Wake Forest.

Last Week: Beat No. 2 Clemson and in the process became bowl eligible.
This Week: -8 vs. Duke. The Blue Devils are off a "big" win of their own as they took down rival North Carolina, 28-27. Bad spot for Pitt but injury-riddled Duke is off three straight games decided by three points or less.

Last Week: Lost at Iowa, 14-13.
This Week: -25.5 vs. Indiana. Don't forget regular season finale at Columbus.

Last Week: For the third straight game, the Hawkeyes failed to top 250 total yards. No matter, they saved their season with a 14-13 win over Big Blue.
This Week: -10.5 at Illinois.

Last Week: Lost to USC, 26-13. Talk that a one-loss PAC-12 team would have a difficult time getting into the Read more

College Football Gambling: Washington loses key defender

11.08.2016     09:53 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Here's an injury worth mentioning. Washington announced that linebacker Joe Mathis will miss the rest of the season with a foot injury. Mathis, the team leader in sacks and tackles for loss, hasn't played the last three weeks and the stats indicate his absence was felt. With Mathis on the field, Washington racked up 24 sacks and 47 TFLs in six games. Without Mathis, the Huskies had only three sacks and nine TFLs in three games. UW's stop unit is loaded with future NFL draft picks, but Mathis' production is hard to ignore. The Huskies are currently -9 home favorites vs. USC for Saturday.

College Football Betting Preview: Washington Huskies at California Golden Bears

Washington at California
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Washington -15.5 O/U 77.5
CRIS Current: Washington -17 O/U 76.5
Recommendation: California

There was a time, earlier in my handicapping career when I was fixated on taking strong defensive underdogs in college football; teams that could cover pointspreads without having to put up touchdowns in bunches. But that era of college football ended (without much fan fare from the betting markets), with the advent of the high octane spread offense, like the one Sonny Dykes is running at Cal these days.

In the football universe circa 2016, my entire thought process involving bigger underdogs has flipped from where it was 15 years ago.  In the modern world, I want my underdogs to be able to score early and often, even if they are defensively weak.  Teams that can put up points in bunches tend to be live underdogs, capable of trading points OR coming through the backdoor should they struggle early.

Underdogs of seven points or more are 4-1 ATS in Cal games this year, with the Bears unable to cover bigger Read more

College Football Betting News: USC can right ship, but probably won't

09.22.2016     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The situation at USC is starting to look like a sub-plot of a Ray Donovan episode. But it's not all doom-and-gloom if the Trojans can somehow snag a win at Utah on Friday. The upcoming schedule is "friendly" with four out of five very winnable games at home (Arizona State, Colorado, Cal and Oregon) and a road trip to mediocre Arizona. That said, the smell of dumpster fire has reportedly spread as far south as Temecula.

"I'm a big social media guy," Helton said. "But I got told today about E.J. Price hitting me, which is funny. I wouldn't be here. I'd be dead, one. Maybe it'd make my face look better."

College Football Betting Preview: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Alabama Crimson Tide

Western Kentucky at Alabama
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -25.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Alabama -29.5 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: Alabama

One of the themes in college football from last week was how bad the SEC looked. Seven losses in the opening weekend was the most ever for the conference, and even in victory, Florida and Tennessee struggled against lesser opponents. For a little over a quarter, it looked like Alabama was going to be part of the ugliness as they trailed USC 3-0 and failed to move the ball on offense. Three quarters later, it was apparent that Alabama was the class of the SEC and the nation after the 52-6 whipping of the Trojans.

Freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts’ entry into the game was the turning point for the Alabama offense, even though he lost a fumble on his first collegiate play. Hurts tossed two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Tide piled up over 400 yards of offense in the final three quarters.

On defense, after allowing a USC field goal on their first possession, the Tide completely shut down the USC offense. The Trojans seemingly Read more
