NFL Playoff Gambling: Betting public on New England despite double-digit pointspread

01.11.2018     11:33 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Under Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots have been consistent profit producers. Including the postseason, the Patriots are 185-128-9 (59.1%) against the spread. But as the pointspread climbs, the results aren't nearly as strong. As a favorite of -7 or more, 66-61-4 (52.0%). And as double-digit favorites, like they are against the Tennessee on Saturday, 27-30-1 (47.4%). But that hasn't stopped the betting public from offering their support. According to, 70% of bets taken have been on the Patriots.

NFL Handicapper Free Wild Card Betting Pick: Tennessee Titans at Kansas City Chiefs

There’s been a flu bug ripping through the Chiefs complex this week, forcing the likes of Justin Houston and Travis Kelce into submission. Head coach Andy Reid is clearly concerned:

“We’ve tried to quarantine the guys the best we could, get them out of the building. Quarantine’s not the right word, but we’ve tried to get them away from the team, tried to isolate them the best we can. Things like this happen and we just kind of hope for the best there.”

It’s not like the Chiefs or Reid have a particularly good postseason track record or a good track record as chalk. KC is just 1-3 SU in the playoffs under Andy Reid, the lone win coming in 2015 against a Texans team that didn’t have anything resembling an NFL quarterback. In fact, since the start of the 2015 campaign, Reid’s Chiefs have been favored by -6.5 or more twelve times. They have more Read more

The betting markets didn’t pay much attention when Will Fuller was activated for the Houston Texans heading into Week 4. The 1-2 Texans had already made the switch to Deshaun Watson at QB, but they were still averaging less than 18 points per game. With their deep threat back in the lineup, the entire offense started to click, and Houston proceeded to score 57, 34, 33 and 38 in their next four ball games. Fuller wasn’t (and isn’t) the focal point of the offense – he’s only caught 13 passes in the four games since his return. But his ability to stretch the field forces opposing defenses to respect his playmaking ability, opening up the running game and the shorter routes for other receivers to take advantage of.

What does any of this have to do with this week's game? Simple – Corey Davis is expected back in the lineup for the Titans this week! Tennessee’s #1 draft choice (the #5 Read more

NFL Gambling Update: Cleveland's Kizer back as starter

10.20.2017     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly

Well, that was quick. No sooner did Cleveland rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer hit the pine, he's now back as the starter. Kevin Hogan played well in relief of Kizer against the Jets but looked very Kizer-esque (20-of-37, 3 INTs) in last week's loss to the Texans. Hue Jackson, who last week said Hogan was "best for our team", claims Kizer "is the guy right now." The Browns are +5.5/+6 home underdogs to Tennessee this Sunday.

"I'm not going to say the rest of the season, but I know he's the guy right now,'' said Jackson. "I hope he is. I hope there are no more times we have to take him out and let him reset himself.''

There appears to be some confusion in the betting markets regarding how good this Tennessee Titans team actually is.  The Titans came into the season with low expectations, after finishing 3-13 and 2-14 in the previous two seasons.  Their 1-3 start – the lone win coming in ‘they gave it to us’ fashion in a fourth quarter comeback at Detroit – didn’t exactly get the markets excited about Tennessee’s chances to reverse their recent fortunes.

Since that time, the Titans are 5-3, including impressive upsets over playoff contenders like Miami and Green Bay.  Their statistical profile is truly impressive.  The Titans are outrushing their foes by 0.7 yards per carry and they have outgained their foes by 0.7 yards per pass attempt as well.  Only the Cowboys and Seahawks have a similar profile, two elite teams.  Marcus Mariota was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for November, with a QB rating Read more

NFL Handicapping: Tennessee Titans continue to trend OVER the total

11.14.2016     08:59 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
After seven straight overs, oddsmakers have had little choice but to adjust Tennessee's totals. The Titans' last five game have averaged a Big XII-esque 64.4 ppg. Note that Week 7's total vs. Indianapolis closed 48. Sunday's second meeting opened 53.5. That's the highest total for a Tennessee game since 2004. Dating back to last season the Titans are on a 12-3 run to the over.

NFL Gambling Alert: Minnesota expected to start Bradford vs. Green Bay

09.16.2016     10:41 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Despite beating the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 with Shaun Hill under center, the Minnesota Vikings are expected to go with Sam Bradford for Sunday night's game against rival Green Bay. Bradford, of course, has only been with the team for two weeks and has had to absorb the playbook quickly. The Packers are currently -2.5 road chalk.

“Everyone’s aware of the nuances that we have in this offense,” tight end Kyle Rudolph said. “Not only knowing what a guy has on what play but trusting that that guy is going to win and be in the spot for you — that’s stuff that you develop over the course of years, and we’re trying to do it over a couple weeks.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Handicapping the NFL post-Week 1

Week 1 of the NFL season routinely tells lies.  The goal of any winning handicapper has to be figuring out which teams were lying in their Week 1 performances.

Look no further than last year for some excellent examples.  On opening day of the 2015 NFL season, the Tennessee Titans blew out Tampa Bay 42-14.  Marcus Mariota looked like a superstar, throwing four TD passes in his NFL debut and finishing the game with a perfect passer rating.

If you bet the Titans the following week, you watched them lose outright by two touchdowns to the NFL’s worst team, Cleveland.   Mariota threw only five TD passes over the next four weeks before getting hurt.  Tennessee finished the season tied for the worst pointspread record in the NFL, cashing only three winning bets in their final 15 games.  The Titans lied to us in Week 1.

Remember when the Dolphins beat the Redskins, and covered as four point road favorites in Washington, thanks to a Jarvis Landry punt return touchdown in the fourth quarter.    Miami lost their next three games so badly that head coach Joe Philbin didn’t survive their bye Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Ranking all 32 NFL teams heading into Week 1

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
The NFL Preseason is in the rear view mirror, with Week 1 kicking off on Thursday as Carolina travels to Denver as -3 road favorites.  Here’s how I have all 32 teams ranked heading into the regular season.

1. Carolina Panthers  - Cam Newton and Carolina’s offense are poised to rank among the most potent attacks in the NFL.  Watch out for the Funchess/Benjamin WR duo!

2. Seattle Seahawks - Russell Wilson gave an MVP caliber performance in 2015, but his ability to repeat that effort could be stunted by the Seahawks offensive line woes.

3. Green Bay Packers - The Packers come out of camp with a full complement of healthy weapons for Aaron Rodgers, good news after Rodgers numbers took a big hit without Jordy Nelson last year.

4. Arizona Cardinals - Arizona returns just about every key player on both sides of the ball from a team that ranked among the NFL’s elite in 2015.

5. New England Patriots - If Tom Brady was at quarterback, this team would be ranked #1.  But with Jimmy Garappolo behind center, the Pats take a modest tumble in my rankings.

6. Kansas City Chiefs - Andy Reid’s Read more
