NCAA Tournament Handicapping: North Carolina Tar Heels favored to win title

03.27.2017     09:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
And then there were four. This weekend's Final Four matchups are set with South Carolina taking on Gonzaga and Oregon squaring off against North Carolina. The Tar Heels are +150 to win the title followed by Gonzaga (+170), Oregon (+475) and South Carolina (+875).

The remaining three games will take place at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. It's obviously a massive structure that will be modified to accommodate the small playing field compared to football. There hasn't been a lot of high profile basketball played at the venue. The only one we came across was the 2009 NCAA Tournament Regional. Here's a bunch of photos that show the layout.

Marquette vs. South Carolina -1 O/U 142
Recommendation: Under

South Carolina doesn’t play at a snail’s pace, but they are truly an elite defensive team and just as truly an ugly offensive team.  So while this total makes sense given the Gamecocks pace of play, it looks a good notch or two too high for this bettor due to the way the play, not their pace of play.  To put this total in perspective, the Gamecocks last game in the SEC tourney against Alabama, was totaled at 122.5 and it stayed under with room to spare.

When we look at the Gamecocks results from non-conference play against opponents who were not familiar with their intense, physical style, we saw totals that were routinely priced waaaaaaay too high.  They were lined at 156.5 against Monmouth, a game that finished with 120 points in regulation.  Their game against Michigan was totaled at 136.5, finishing with 107 points.  Against Syracuse on a neutral floor at Madison Square Garden, it was another game that stayed 20+ points Under.  Similar class games Seton Hall on a neutral floor, Clemson and Memphis were all Read more

Texas at Michigan -11 O/U 130
Recommendation: Michigan

Not an ideal matchup for the Texas Longhorns as they travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan tonight. These two squads hooked up last season in the Bahamas with the Wolverines winning 78-72. UT's starting lineup in the game featured four seniors and junior -- all of which are no longer on the team. This year's edition is littered with underclassmen who will likely struggle against Michigan's methodical brand of basketball. We've already witnessed multiple instances of UT's youth being exposed. Against veteran and fundamentally sound teams Northwestern, Colorado, and UT-Arlington, the Longhorns lost by margins of 19, 14, and 11. Those three squads, who aren't overly athletic, outrebounded Texas by a combined margin of 122-98. Texas fired back last Friday with a 77-68 win over Alabama; a game that was deadlocked heading into the final five minutes before UT pulled away. With such a young squad, one that has struggled on the offensive end (27% 3-pt, 65% FT), forcing turnovers and thus creating high percentage looks would go a long way. In those four games, the turnover battle was nearly dead even. Now Read more

College Football Handicapping: South Carolina moves forward with two frosh quarterbacks

10.25.2016     10:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like South Carolina is going the youth movement route as senior quarterback Perry Orth has been phased out of what has been a revolving door of starters. Orth didn't play in last week's 34-28 win over UMass as the Gamecocks topped 20 points for the first time this season. Freshmen Jake Bentley and Brandon McIlwain will now battle for playing time moving forward. Bentley started against the Minutemen and is expected to do the same vs. Tennessee.

“I just feel like right now, from an ability standpoint, (Bentley and McIlwain) give us the best opportunity, and they’re just going to keep getting better,” Muschamp said. “Both of them do things equally well, and we’ll continue to rep that way.”

“Competition is my best friend, and those guys are two competitive guys,” Muschamp said. “They are going to go out every single day and battle and support each other. It’s going to be good for the Gamecocks. That’s what I’m looking forward to. We have two good

College Football Betting Preview: East Carolina Pirates at South Carolina Gamecocks

East Carolina at South Carolina
Saturday, 1 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener:
South Carolina -5.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: South Carolina -3 O/U 50
Recommendation: East Carolina

I have no qualms recommending a bet against South Carolina laying points, especially facing a solid East Carolina team that has notched back-to-back wins to open the season including last week against NC State. It was a quality win considering the fact ECU brought in a new head coach in Scottie Montgomery combined with new coordinators and systems on both sides of the football. There has been a ton of rebuilding due to graduation losses along the offensive line and in various levels of their defense which led me to believe it could take some time for this team to gel. The Pirates however knocked off the Wolfpack 33-30 last week with Minnesota transfer QB Philip Nelson showing he has a solid grasp of this offense. Nelson is completing 81.3% of his passes through two games for 695 yards with 6 TDs and just 1 INT.

South Carolina has played two mediocre offensive teams to begin the season in SEC foes Vanderbilt and Read more

College Football Handicapping: A look back at Season Over/Under Wins

12.07.2015     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A quick look back at some of college football's biggest under and overachievers from a regular season over/under wins perspective. Original lines courtesy of CG Technology.

Florida
Season Over/Under Wins: 7ov-130
Regular Season Wins: 10
Storyline: A couple of close wins and down seasons by a majority of the SEC East helped the Gators pop for 10 wins. They were only a modest +0.37 yards per play vs. SEC foes.

Georgia Tech
Season Over/Under Wins: 7.5ov-140
Regular Season Wins: 3
Storyline: A shoddy offensive line and decline in skill position talent led to Paul Johnson's worst season in Atlanta. After posting the nation's top third down conversion rate in 2014 (57.9%) the Yellow Jackets plummeted to 108th (34.9%).

Iowa
Season Over/Under Wins: 7.5un-120
Regular Season Wins: 12
Storyline: Buoyed by one of the easiest regular season conference schedules in the country (avoided Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and Ohio State) and a +12 turnover margin, the Hawkeyes were one win away from making the Playoffs.

College Football Betting: Teams cash tickets following coaching departures

11.02.2015     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Add Hawaii's Norm Chow to the list of college football coaches that have been either fired, resigned, or retired this season. With the exception of UCF, teams have responded fairly strong against the spread following their respective coaching changes. Let's take a look...

Minnesota - Jerry Kill was forced to step down due to health reasons and the Golden Gophers responded with a big effort in a near-upset win over Michigan. Minny easily cover +10.5 but a wild goalline finish gave the Wolverines the 29-26 victory.

Miami - No Al Golden and no Brad Kaaya didn't stop the Hurricanes from pulling off the "upset" at Duke. They in no way deserved to win the game, but easily cashed +10 for their backers.

UCF - The Golden Knights have shown no fight following George O'Leary's departure. Two weeks ago, at home, they were crushed by Houston 59-10 and then last week, a similar outcome in a 52-7 loss at Cincinnati.

South Carolina - The Gamecocks have notched back-to-back pointspread covers following Steve Spurrier's resignation.

USC - After a decent Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Coaching changes result in pointspread covers

10.19.2015     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Solid results last week (2-2 SU, 3-1 ATS) from team's with recent head coaching changes. Let's take a look at what went down...

North Texas - Despite losing 55-28, the Mean Green slipped under the number (+32.5) against Western Kentucky. Given the horrible circumstances -- firing a coach on a short week -- it wasn't that bad of a showing. Actually, it was, as WKU outgained NT by 252 yards. Bettors are already lining up to fade North Texas this week with Marshall jumping from -27 to -29 home chalk.

South Carolina - The Gamecocks took care of business in an ugly 19-10 win and cover over Vanderbilt. USC outgained VU 424-332 and benefited from a +3 turnover edge. They'll enjoy a bye week before back-to-back road games at Texas A&M and Tennessee.

USC - The Trojans outgained the Irish by over 100 yards and were tied 31-31 early in the fourth quarter. Notre Dame however closed the game with a touchdown and field goal to win and cover 41-31. USC plays host to No. 3 Read more

Football Gambling Update: Bettors line up to fade teams with departed head coaches

10.13.2015     12:24 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The betting markets are always looking for an excuse to bet against teams in turmoil and Christmas has come early with multiple head coaching changes over the last week. Take a look at some of the line moves against teams having to appoint new leaders midseason.

Western Kentucky at North Texas
CRIS Opener: North Texas +29.5
CRIS Current: North Texas +32.5
Comment: Usually coaches get fired with a bye week upcoming. Not North Texas. The Mean Green were destroyed by FCS Portland State 66-7 last Saturday and turn right around and play host to 5-1 Western Kentucky on Thursday.

Vanderbilt at South Carolina
CRIS Opener: South Carolina -5.5
CRIS Current: South Carolina -3
Comment: Rather than coach out the rest of the season, Spurrier is officially done and handing over the reigns to offensive line coach Shawn Elliott. Giving bettors an extra reason for betting against the Gamecocks is that the Commodores come in off of a bye week.

USC at Notre Dame
CRIS Opener: USC +4
CRIS Current: USC +6.5
Comment: The market was slow to react to this one as Notre Dame held -4 Read more

College Football Betting: Multiple mid-season firings

10.13.2015     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A handful of coaching situations for bettors to be aware of.

Steve Sarkisian (USC) - Reports recently came out that Sarkisian has a major drinking problem. USC had no choice but to let him go prior to three straight games against ranked opponents including Saturday's trip to South Bend.

Replacement - Clay Helton who has served as USC's OC and stepped in as interim HC when Ed Orgeron bailed after hearing he had no shot at landing the full-time gig. Helton has been with the program for six years.

Dan McCarney (North Texas) - Two years ago, the Mean Green were riding high with a 9-win season and bowl win. Last year they took a step back (4-8) and this season has been nothing short of a disaster with blowout losses to SMU, Southern Miss, and FCS Portland State.  It's likely NT's only shot at a win is the season finale vs. equally woeful UTEP.

Replacement - Offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Chris Cosh will serve as co-interim head coaches.

Randy Edsall (Maryland) - Edsall was reportedly going to last until the end of the season but the Terps decided the Read more
