NCAA Tournament Handicapping: North Carolina Tar Heels favored to win title

03.27.2017     09:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
And then there were four. This weekend's Final Four matchups are set with South Carolina taking on Gonzaga and Oregon squaring off against North Carolina. The Tar Heels are +150 to win the title followed by Gonzaga (+170), Oregon (+475) and South Carolina (+875).

The remaining three games will take place at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. It's obviously a massive structure that will be modified to accommodate the small playing field compared to football. There hasn't been a lot of high profile basketball played at the venue. The only one we came across was the 2009 NCAA Tournament Regional. Here's a bunch of photos that show the layout.

Marquette vs. South Carolina -1 O/U 142
Recommendation: Under

South Carolina doesn’t play at a snail’s pace, but they are truly an elite defensive team and just as truly an ugly offensive team.  So while this total makes sense given the Gamecocks pace of play, it looks a good notch or two too high for this bettor due to the way the play, not their pace of play.  To put this total in perspective, the Gamecocks last game in the SEC tourney against Alabama, was totaled at 122.5 and it stayed under with room to spare.

When we look at the Gamecocks results from non-conference play against opponents who were not familiar with their intense, physical style, we saw totals that were routinely priced waaaaaaay too high.  They were lined at 156.5 against Monmouth, a game that finished with 120 points in regulation.  Their game against Michigan was totaled at 136.5, finishing with 107 points.  Against Syracuse on a neutral floor at Madison Square Garden, it was another game that stayed 20+ points Under.  Similar class games Seton Hall on a neutral floor, Clemson and Memphis were all Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Texas Longhorns at Michigan Wolverines

Texas at Michigan -11 O/U 130
Recommendation: Michigan

Not an ideal matchup for the Texas Longhorns as they travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan tonight. These two squads hooked up last season in the Bahamas with the Wolverines winning 78-72. UT's starting lineup in the game featured four seniors and junior -- all of which are no longer on the team. This year's edition is littered with underclassmen who will likely struggle against Michigan's methodical brand of basketball. We've already witnessed multiple instances of UT's youth being exposed. Against veteran and fundamentally sound teams Northwestern, Colorado, and UT-Arlington, the Longhorns lost by margins of 19, 14, and 11. Those three squads, who aren't overly athletic, outrebounded Texas by a combined margin of 122-98. Texas fired back last Friday with a 77-68 win over Alabama; a game that was deadlocked heading into the final five minutes before UT pulled away. With such a young squad, one that has struggled on the offensive end (27% 3-pt, 65% FT), forcing turnovers and thus creating high percentage looks would go a long way. In those four games, the turnover battle was nearly dead even. Now Read more

College Football Handicapping: South Carolina moves forward with two frosh quarterbacks

10.25.2016     10:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like South Carolina is going the youth movement route as senior quarterback Perry Orth has been phased out of what has been a revolving door of starters. Orth didn't play in last week's 34-28 win over UMass as the Gamecocks topped 20 points for the first time this season. Freshmen Jake Bentley and Brandon McIlwain will now battle for playing time moving forward. Bentley started against the Minutemen and is expected to do the same vs. Tennessee.

“I just feel like right now, from an ability standpoint, (Bentley and McIlwain) give us the best opportunity, and they’re just going to keep getting better,” Muschamp said. “Both of them do things equally well, and we’ll continue to rep that way.”

“Competition is my best friend, and those guys are two competitive guys,” Muschamp said. “They are going to go out every single day and battle and support each other. It’s going to be good for the Gamecocks. That’s what I’m looking forward to. We have two good

College Football Betting Preview: East Carolina Pirates at South Carolina Gamecocks

East Carolina at South Carolina
Saturday, 1 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener:
South Carolina -5.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: South Carolina -3 O/U 50
Recommendation: East Carolina

I have no qualms recommending a bet against South Carolina laying points, especially facing a solid East Carolina team that has notched back-to-back wins to open the season including last week against NC State. It was a quality win considering the fact ECU brought in a new head coach in Scottie Montgomery combined with new coordinators and systems on both sides of the football. There has been a ton of rebuilding due to graduation losses along the offensive line and in various levels of their defense which led me to believe it could take some time for this team to gel. The Pirates however knocked off the Wolfpack 33-30 last week with Minnesota transfer QB Philip Nelson showing he has a solid grasp of this offense. Nelson is completing 81.3% of his passes through two games for 695 yards with 6 TDs and just 1 INT.

South Carolina has played two mediocre offensive teams to begin the season in SEC foes Vanderbilt and Read more
