NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Rhode Island Rams vs. Oregon Ducks

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Rhode Island +5 vs. Oregon O/U 141
Recommendation: Rhode Island

When we talk about impact injuries on the defensive end of the court, the Ducks loss of shot blocking center Chris Boucher really stands out. Boucher was not a great offensive player, but he was a low post difference maker on defense. In their first game without him in the lineup, the Ducks struggled to get stops, allowing 83 points on 58% shooting in the PAC-12 title game against Arizona. In their second game without Boucher, they allowed 77 points on 44% shooting to Iona.

The pointspread outcome in that game came down to the final possession despite the fact that the Ducks shot 56% from the floor and won the rebounding battle by 14. That’s certainly not a good sign moving forward, and Oregon is not a ‘value laden’ team at this stage of the campaign.

Rhode Island is on the other end of the ‘value’ equation. The Rams did not play their best basketball, struggling SU and ATS early and often in November, December and into January. Key contributors like senior low post stud Hassan Martin, junior point guard Jarvis Read more

Atlantic-10 Tournament Betting Free Play: UMass Minutemen vs. VCU Rams

Massachusetts +8.5 vs. VCU O/U 151.5
Recommendation: UMass

I'm of the belief that teams facing VCU for a second time are going to perform better. The element of surprise with the "Havoc" isn't as strong and an entire game of film can be dissected. When UMass traveled to VCU earlier this season the inevitable occurred – the Minutemen turned the ball over 24 times and lost by 18. Make no mistake, UMass is going to cough it up more than a few times tonight, but I'm confident that the change in venue and situation (UMass playing for its NCAA Tournament life) is going to make this more of a competitive matchup. And another thing to consider is VCU isn't the same team away from home. The Rams played nine games against A-10 opponents on the road/neutral and had exactly one win by more than seven points – against the worst team in the league, Duquesne.

Atlantic-10 Tournament Betting Preview

Atlantic-10 Tournament Preview

The Atlantic-10 Conference Tournament has moved from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, home of the Nets for the 2013 season.  This conference got four Big Dance bids last year (Xavier, who made a run all the way to the Sweet 16, along with Saint Louis, St. Bonaventure and Temple).  They should get four teams into the mix this year – Saint Louis, VCU, Temple and Butler – and a fifth team, LaSalle, is live to get an at large bid if it doesn’t earn an auto-bid from winning the tourney title.

Last year the top seeds didn’t bring much intensity to the A-10 tournament, knowing that their Big Dance bids were already secure.  No. 1 seed Temple lost in their first game, as did No. 2 Saint Louis, and No. 4 seed St Bonaventure won the title in an 11-point win over Xavier on Selection Sunday.  I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if we saw a similar no-show from some of the top seeds this year!

College Basketball Handicapping: Providence down to six players vs. Rhode Island

12.06.2012     10:25 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Rhode Island at Providence -7

Providence is expected to be without the services of leading scorer Bryce Cotton for tonight's game against rival Rhode Island. Assuming Cotton doesn't play, the Friars will have one bench player.

“Obviously, I’m not concerned with the guys that are not playing,” Providence coach Ed Cooley told “I think those guys have a chance to be good. I’m more focused in on the guys that are playing.”

“The MRI was good, now he’s just really, really sore,” Cooley said. “He’ll be doubtful, he probably won’t play.”

“Think about it, I got one sub right now,” Cooley said.

Rhode Island at Fordham -3.5 O/U 135
Recommendation: Fordham

Rhode Island has been a complete disaster this year as it limps into this road contest with a 3-15 record. Head coach Jim Baron is taking heat and grasping at straws to turn this season around, but none of his lineup changes have worked. The Rams’ wins thus far came against Boston College, James Madison and Hofstra. They kicked their best player, Jamal Wilson, off the team in December and added transfers Andre Malone and Baron’s son Billy who have had little to no impact. RI’s defense has been atrocious allowing 48.9 % from the field and 49.9% on the road. Fordham has made some improvements under head coach Tom Pecora, including home wins against Georgia Tech and Harvard. The Rams are coming off an 80-62 loss at St. Joe's and should be ready for a nice effort at home against an opponent that they should be able to beat. Take the home side.

CBB Handicapping: Pitt opens season against Rhode Island

11.08.2010     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
Rhode Island at Pittsburgh -12 O/U 135.5

Zoinks! The college basketball season starts today. Four lined games with only the Rhode Island vs. Pittsburgh game currently totaled. Here is a preview from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Looks like the Panthers will be a bit thin to start due to injuries, most notably Nasir Robinson who started all 34 games last year. Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon was quoted as saying that despite the team's pedigree for a more moderate tempo, he wants to push the pace some with point guard Travon Woodall. Rhode Island returns three starters.

"We want him to play faster, push the ball more," Dixon said. "That's not normally what we want to do, but we want him to get more transition opportunities for us."

"It's a different opener than most teams in the country have,"

"But it got to the point as a team that we had to make the best of the situation."It's been a joy for us to continue to play. We're still excited to play, and we've been showing that enthusiasm on the court."

"Everybody was hungry to start a new season," freshman point guard Dexter Strickland says. "Practices were more intense. Coaches were more intense. Everyone was more competitive. Everybody has a

Where Will Penders End Up?

03.22.2010     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It was announced just a little while ago that Tom Penders has stepped down as coach of the Houston Cougars.

Penders has racked up over 600 wins in his time as a coach and has taken four different teams (including this Houston squad) to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars were 14-17 ATS this season.

He has shown an ability to take floundering programs and build them up to respectability. Taking over a Houston program that had posted 10 or more wins only twice in the seven seasons before he arrived in 2004, Penders took the Cougars to five postseason tournaments.

There are some major conference openings that may come knocking on his door. Iowa, Oregon, Auburn, St. John's, DePaul and Seton Hall all have coaching vacancies. Keep in mind he has east coast ties, growing up in Connecticut while also coaching at Fordham, Rhode Island and GW.
