NFL Preseason Betting: Pittsburgh goes with rookie QB Dobbs

08.11.2017     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Ben Roethlisberger sitting and backup Landry Jones injured, the Pittsburgh Steelers will start fourth round draft pick Joshua Dobbs tonight against the New York Giants. At Tennessee, Dobbs posted the highest passer rating in the SEC and also rushed for over 800 yards. The Giants opened -2.5 home chalk but have since been bet up to -3.5/-4.

“I am just interested in his game-day demeanor, his ability to communicate through circumstances,” Tomlin said, “not only with his fellow players but also with coaches as well.”

Super Bowl LI Gambling: Prop bets give bettors a great chance for big profits

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The stage is set for Sunday's Super Bowl LI in Houston. The Las Vegas and offshore consensus opening line was New England -3 and it's held put save for a few shops adjusting on juice.  The total opened 57 and has since been bet up to 58.5 offshore and 59 in Vegas. This is the sixth Super Bowl that will feature the league's top scoring offense (Atlanta) against the league's top scoring defense NFL (New England). The top ranked scoring defense won four of the five previous games; the most recent in 2013 when Seattle demolished Denver 43-8.

As mentioned in previous columns, New England's gaudy numbers were assisted in a big way by the league's weakest strength of schedule. The Patriots also faced a slew of lower-tiered quarterbacks. But against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were projected to be their toughest offensive opponent to-date, New England allowed a modest 368 yards and 17 points en route to a dominating 36-17 win in the AFC Championship. Atlanta's offensive output (420 ypg, 6.7 ypp) was in no way fluky. The Falcons faced one of the toughest defensive slates in the league and routinely were able to move the ball seemingly at will. The big question is can Read more

A Pefect Match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

NFL Gambling: Bettors gear up for Conference Championship weekend

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The scoreboard operator at the Georgia Dome in expected to be busy at Sunday’s NFC title clash between the Packers and Falcons. Both offenses should be primed to light up the scoreboard as evidenced by the fact this game is currently lined at 60/60.5 at every major offshore and Las Vegas sportsbook. Aaron Rodgers continued his elite level play in Sunday’s thrilling 34-31 win over Dallas. He completed 28-of-43 passes for 356 yards and now has a spectacular 21-to-1 TD-to-INT ratio during the Packers’ current 8-0 SU, 7-1 ATS surge. The absence of Jordy Nelson was negated by “step up” efforts from Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison (each with three or more catches). Tight end Jared Cook also hauled in six passes including the all-important one that set up the game winning field goal. But Green Bay’s defense was exposed, especially in the secondary, where injuries remain plentiful. Dallas rolled up 429 total yards including 302 through the air. That doesn’t bode well for their matchup against Matt Ryan and an Atlanta offense that posted some of the league’s best offensive numbers. Note that the Falcons ranked tops in the Read more

NFL Handicapping: A look at this weekend's four Divisional Round matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta’s offense was both visually and statistically (33.8 ppg and 415.8 ypg) dominant for much of the season. They play host to a Seattle defense that obviously has a strong pedigree, particularly in the secondary. But that dominant secondary has been exposed at times this year and was recently dealt a key injury with Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas out. Detroit couldn’t take advantage of Thomas’ absence as it was clear Matthew Stafford was not 100 percent due to a dislocated finger. And the Lions’ offensive line was banged up and missing two starters. In the end, the Seahawks surrendered only 231 total yards. It will be a much more difficult task this weekend as Atlanta’s offense is in a far better position to successfully move the football. Matt Ryan (38 TDs, 7 INTs, 69.9% completion rate) has a host of skill position weapons and like we saw against Arizona and Green Bay, Seattle can be exposed through the air. There are questions about Atlanta’s defense which ranked in the bottom third of the league in a number of categories. After struggling to run the football for virtually the entire regular season, Thomas Rawls went for 161 yards against Read more

NFL Gambling Alert: Big steam has Kansas City Chiefs now -2.5 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Big move towards the Kansas City Chiefs this morning as the line jumped from -1 to -2.5 at a number of offshore sportsbooks. Perhaps a reaction to the status of Ben Roethlisberger's ankle injury. Roethlisberger says he's certain to play but will spend much of the week in a walking boot.

"We don't know anything yet, but we'll find out soon enough," Roethlisberger said about his prognosis. "You're always worried about being hurt, but I'll be out there next week."

NFL Gambling: Questionable quarterbacks highlight Wild Card matchups

01.05.2017     10:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This weekend's four Wild Card matchups feature four quarterbacks with Super Bowl rings. It also features a backup, a failed starter who may have lucked into getting his job back, and a third string rookie.

Miami's Matt Moore has looked semi-viable and will get the nod against Pittsburgh.

"Unless something changes drastically here in the next two days or three days, he's going into this thing as the starter," Gase said of Moore.

Houston's Brock Osweiler, who last time out got into a "heated exchange" with head coach Bill O'Brien, is slated to go against Oakland.

"What happens between Coach O'Brien and myself or whatever's said between Coach O'Brien and myself, it stays between us," Osweiler said. "That's where I'm going to leave that. My focus has moved toward Oakland."

NFL Gambling: Previewing all four Wild Card round matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Saturday’s Oakland-Houston matchup is likely to be decided by which team can produce adequate quarterback play. Derek Carr suffered a season-ending injury in Week 16 against Indianapolis and in Sunday’s loss to Denver, Matt McGloin left the game with a left shoulder injury and is highly doubtful. That means bettors are likely to see rookie Connor Cook under center for a Raiders team playing in their first playoff game since 2002. Things aren’t much clearer for Houston with Tom Savage experiencing concussion symptoms and currently questionable. Savage’s status essentially forced Bill O’Brien into going back to the well with Brock Osweiler. Oakland had a noticeable lack of spirit in the loss to Denver despite having a with a chance to win the AFC West and earn a first round bye. The Raiders were physically manhandled by a Broncos team that was already eliminated from the playoffs. The biggest handicapping factor for this game is whether or not Oakland has the belief it can win a playoff game after seeing its top two quarterbacks go down with injuries. It makes sense why the total in this game is the lowest of the four games this weekend with most Read more

Using Strength of Schedule to Handicap the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs

01.02.2017     09:24 AM     Printer Friendly
The theory is actually quite simple; since 2002, teams with a higher Strength of Schedule (using Sagarin’s Ratings) are a remarkable 40-16 straight up and 40-15-1 against the spread (73% winners) regardless of price and location. Even more amazing is that teams with a SOS differential of 10 or more went 23-4 SU, 22-4-1 ATS (85% winners). Taking it step further, teams with a better SOS that are underdogs went 16-12 SU, 21-6 ATS. Underdogs with a SOS rating of 10 or better went 10-4 SU and 11-3 ATS. This is not a perfect science when it comes to grading plays. For example, last year the Steelers were -2/-2.5 and won 18-16. That said, with 14 years of results, this is one of the strongest publically known NFL trends available.

In 2002 the NFL expanded to its current format of 32 teams; eight divisions with four teams each. There wasn’t much upheaval as the league added the Houston Texans to the AFC and Seattle switched to the NFC. Two new divisions were created as the league kept the integrity of the established divisional rivalries pretty much intact. The playoff format was modified so that four division winners and two Read more
