College Basketball Betting Free Play: Colorado Buffaloes vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

Colorado +7 vs. Arizona State O/U 147
Recommendation: Colorado

Pretty interesting to see 11-7 Stanford laying -9 vs. 2-16 California and then 8-10 Arizona State laying -7 vs. 8-10 Colorado. The Sun Devils' statistical profile (+0.02 points per possession) within the PAC-12 is a tad stronger than 8-10. And certainly stronger than that of Colorado (-0.05 ppp). But in watching both squads and looking at this matchup through the lense of a "one game" scenario, I have a difficult time seeing seven points worth of difference. The Buffaloes won the first meeting in Boulder, 90-81 in overtime. In the second meeting, ASU returned the favor with an 80-66 win in Tempe. It should be noted that Colorado led that game with 10 minutes to go but simply wore down; likely a result from playing the dreaded second game of a Thursday-Saturday PAC-12 road trip. Overall, Arizona State's power rating is still boosted by one of the best non-conference showings in the country thanks to wins over Xavier and Kansas. But over the course of an 18-game conference slate, the Sun Devils were far from dominant. Of their eight victories, three came against bottom Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Missouri Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks

Missouri at South Carolina -2 O/U 140
Recommendation: Under

Missouri's Cuonzo Martin and South Carolina's Frank Martin have long been coaches you can play under the total given the right circumstances. I see tonight as an opportunity with the Tigers opening SEC play and the Gamecocks off a 74-69 road loss to Ole Miss. During non-conference play, Mizzou at times showed capable on the offensive end while also willing to get up and down the floor. But against comparable competition, their scores and pace were far more moderate. Games against Iowa State, Utah, UCF, and Illinois yielded 133, 136, 121, and 134 points. They did however get caught up in a few high scoring affairs against St. John's (90-82) and West Virginia (83-79) as well as recent home contests vs. a few up-tempo mid-major squads. Interestingly, Martin's Cal team from a year ago played in only four PAC-12 games that closed higher than 140 and those were against Arizona State, UCLA, and Washington; three teams that played with tremendous pace and didn’t defend. It's pointless to use South Carolina's results from a season ago considering all of the experience and Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Utah Utes at Oregon Ducks

Utah at Oregon -10.5 O/U 148.5
Recommendation: Under

PAC-12 conference play tips off tonight with the Utah Utes headed to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks. The matchup will have a far different look than a year ago with Oregon enduring a major roster turnover and Utah potentially without the services of a few key players. Both teams failed to impress during non-conference play with a combined 1-5 SU mark vs. teams currently inside Ken Pom's top 75. The Utes will be without the services of Donnie Tillman (10.7 ppg) and Chris Seely (4.7 ppg). And leading scorer David Collette (13.5 ppg) and fellow starter Gabe Bealer (8.3 ppg) are currently listed as questionable. Meanwhile Oregon lost nearly every key piece of last year's Final Four squad and it showed the first month of the season with losses to UConn and Boise State. They've since fired back with five straight wins though covered only twice. What stood out most to me in this matchup was the total. Dating back to 2013, Larry Krystkowiak and Dana Altman have faced each other 11 times. Not once did a game yield more than 70 possessions in regulation and not once did both teams combined for over 145 Read more

College Football Handicapping: Herm Edwards off to a hot start at Arizona State

12.19.2017     06:47 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Like most bettors, we're still trying to wrap our heads around Arizona State's decision to hire Herm Edwards. Long term, this has close to no chance of working out. But it's the Sun Devils' upcoming Sun Bowl Bowl matchup vs. NC State that has our attention. For whatever reason, the athletics director encouraged Edwards to keep both coordinators, which Edwards did. The only problem is they didn't stick around. Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett left for what is being called "health reasons" while offensive coordinator Billy Napier took the head job at UL-Lafayette. Shortly after, Edwards promoted wide receivers coach Rob Likens to offensive coordinator ASU's fourth OC in four years. And no one really knows who will be in charge of the defense. The only thing that can make this situation even more entertaining is if Read more

College Football Handicapping: Utah's Huntley on track to start vs. West Virginia

12.15.2017     09:23 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
When healthy, Utah's Tyler Huntley is one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country. However, due to his smaller stature (6-1, 190 lbs.) and fearlessness, he's prone to injury. After missing two games midseason, the Utes tried to bring him back slowly and limit the amount of risky plays. But Huntley's rushing attempts ended up increasing each of the next four games. Against Washington, he had a season-high 25 attempts which resulted in him missing the regular season finale due to an "undisclosed injury." Backup Troy Williams was serviceable and so was Huntley at less than 100 percent, but the Utes' offense really hummed when the playbook was open and Huntley was allowed to run wild. According to reports, the sophomore quarterback appears on track to start vs. West Virginia in the Heart of Dallas Bowl (Dec. 26). The Utes were bet up from an opener of -4.5 to -7.

“I expect to start in the bowl game. I felt pretty good,” Huntley said. “Today was

College Football Gambling: Washington State dismissed top two receivers

12.11.2017     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
'Tis also the season for bowl games suspensions. Washington State will be without its two top receivers with Tavares Martin and Isaiah Johnson-Mack dismissed from the team. The due combined for 130 catches, 1,386 yards, and 14 touchdowns. The Cougars are currently -3 favorites vs. Michigan State in the Holiday Bowl (Dec. 28).

“There’s 120 people out there and over almost 30 years, am I surprised people make screwy decisions? No,” Leach said. “You don’t always know where it’s going to land, but it happens all the time. We’re far more concerned about the people here than the ones that aren’t, and I think you ought to be, too.”

College Football Betting: Michigan State doesn't sound giddy about its Holiday Bowl berth

12.11.2017     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
‘Tis the season to be miffed about what crappy bowl game you'll be playing in. The Holiday Bowl is generally thought of as "semi-decent" but Michigan State had its sights set on a trip to Florida. And if you read between the lines, it isn't so much the Spartans are playing a top 25 team in San Diego as much as it is getting passed over by rival Michigan. MSU finished 9-3 and 7-2 in Big Ten play. UM finished 8-4 and 5-4 in Big Ten play AND lost to Sparty straight up. The Wolverines get to play on New Year's in the Outback Bowl while the Spartans play on Dec. 28 against Washington State. Plenty of time to "recover" but we've seen teams fail to show up in the postseason for far less circumstances.

"I just look at it as an opportunity to play in the Holiday Bowl right now," Dantonio said. "The records are what they are. I’ll just continue to concentrate on beating Michigan and let things sort of sort out."

"Life’s about how you handle disappointments," Dantonio said. "I would not say going to the Holiday Bowl is

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona State Sun Devils

USC at Arizona State
Saturday, 7:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: USC -3 O/U 58
CRIS Current: USC -3.5 O/U 59
Recommendation: USC

Arizona State is one of the most interesting teams in college football. One one hand you have a team with three outright wins at double-digit underdogs. On the other hand, a statistical profile that is downright ugly. Despite their 4-3 overall, 3-1 PAC-12 records, the Sun Devils have been outgained by nearly a full yard per play (6.19 ypp allowed, 5.22 ypp gained) this season. And you can also make a case that a majority of ASU's opponents were later discovered to be overrated. San Diego State has recently been exposed as has Texas Tech. Since losing in Tempe, Oregon has dropped three of four; albeit with a backup quarterback. Washington was clearly living off last year's accomplishments and an ultra-soft schedule and Utah has been dealing with a lack of stability at the quarterback position. To call ASU a complete "fraud" is probably too harsh, but I have a hard time buying into this squad despite a handful of at-the-time impressive Read more

College Football Betting: Utah and Oregon offenses limp into Saturday's matchup

10.24.2017     09:03 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The up-tempo experiment for Utah appears to be officially scrapped after the Utes lost their third straight game. It looked promising early on with quarterback Tyler Huntley scampering around and making plays. But Huntley's reckless style led to a Week 4 injury and a return to former starter Troy Williams. Williams is not an efficient signal caller (53% completions) and thus not ideal to run any type of "up-tempo" scheme. Williams was however solid (16-of-27, 262 yards) in Utah's 28-27 loss to USC but Huntley was healthy enough to start last week against Arizona State and ended up throwing four interceptions. Three straight losses, zero continuity at the quarterback position, and a head coach who has made a career out of playing it close to the vest suggests the Utes may run the ball 60 times this weekend in Eugene. And speaking of offensive struggles, Oregon has scored only 31 points during its own three-game slide. The Ducks have all but completely ditched the forward pass (28 attempts, 107 yards last two games). Three weeks ago, this total would have Read more
