NFL Betting News: McAdoo out, Manning back, Giants taking money

12.08.2017     09:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This has gotta be worth a few points, no? The New York Giants fired head coach Ben McAdoo -- that's a good thing. They also reinstated Eli Manning as the starting quarterback -- probably a good thing considering Geno Smith is the back up. And one could argue it's the G-Men's "Super Bowl" on Sunday with a home game against rival Dallas. The market says it's worth 2.5 points with the Cowboys bet down from -6 to -3.5 road chalk.

“It’s important to play,” Manning said during his weekly meeting with reporters. “That’s what I love to do. I love to play quarterback. I love playing quarterback for the New York Giants. That’s what I work on. Last week something different was asked of me. I tried to do to the best of my abilities helping Geno and being the backup. But if I knew, I’d want the opportunity to be the starting quarterback again.”

LA Chargers at NY Giants
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener: New York -3 O/U 43.5
CRIS Current: New York -3 O/U 44.5
Recommendation: Under

My clients and I cashed a winning bet on the Giants over the total last week, yet I’m recommending a play on the under here. What gives? Let me start with an excerpt from my write-up last week:

“Facing Tampa’s banged up defense, Case Keenum looked like a pro bowler: 369 passing yards on 11.1 per attempts, 3 TD’s without an INT and a QB rating of 142.1 for the game. That, folks, is Tampa Bay’s stop unit right now. DT Chris Baker is dealing with a nasty bout of the flu. CB Brent Grimes has a bad shoulder. LB Kwon Alexander is out with a hamstring injury. DT Gerald McCoy has a bum ankle. DE Noah Spence is playing with a dislocated shoulder. LB Lavonte David turned his ankle. DE Jacquies Smith has been out since preseason. Safety TJ Ward is dealing with an injured hip. Defensive coordinator Mike Smith: “Unfortunately, we’ve got some guys that are down, but nobody is going to feel Read more

NFL Gambling Alert: Sportsbooks scramble following Elliott suspension

08.14.2017     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With running back Ezekiel Elliott suspended for six games, sportsbooks have taken the Cowboys-Giants Week 1 matchup off of the board. Dallas opened -6.5 back in April but money slowly came in on New York as it sat -5.5/-5 for much of the summer.

NFL Preseason Betting: Pittsburgh goes with rookie QB Dobbs

08.11.2017     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Ben Roethlisberger sitting and backup Landry Jones injured, the Pittsburgh Steelers will start fourth round draft pick Joshua Dobbs tonight against the New York Giants. At Tennessee, Dobbs posted the highest passer rating in the SEC and also rushed for over 800 yards. The Giants opened -2.5 home chalk but have since been bet up to -3.5/-4.

“I am just interested in his game-day demeanor, his ability to communicate through circumstances,” Tomlin said, “not only with his fellow players but also with coaches as well.”

A Pefect Match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

NFL Gambling: Previewing all four Wild Card round matchups

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Saturday’s Oakland-Houston matchup is likely to be decided by which team can produce adequate quarterback play. Derek Carr suffered a season-ending injury in Week 16 against Indianapolis and in Sunday’s loss to Denver, Matt McGloin left the game with a left shoulder injury and is highly doubtful. That means bettors are likely to see rookie Connor Cook under center for a Raiders team playing in their first playoff game since 2002. Things aren’t much clearer for Houston with Tom Savage experiencing concussion symptoms and currently questionable. Savage’s status essentially forced Bill O’Brien into going back to the well with Brock Osweiler. Oakland had a noticeable lack of spirit in the loss to Denver despite having a with a chance to win the AFC West and earn a first round bye. The Raiders were physically manhandled by a Broncos team that was already eliminated from the playoffs. The biggest handicapping factor for this game is whether or not Oakland has the belief it can win a playoff game after seeing its top two quarterbacks go down with injuries. It makes sense why the total in this game is the lowest of the four games this weekend with most Read more

NFL Gambling News: Bettors should avoid the Minnesota Vikings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I looked at betting strategies for two AFC teams the remainder of the season. We pegged Kansas City as “bet against” and Pittsburgh “bet on” as both teams delivered with the Chiefs losing outright at home to Tennessee and the Steelers getting the win and cover at Cincinnati. This week we’ll use the same format but turn our attention to the NFC.

The Detroit Lions’ lead in the NFC North fell to just one game following their 17-6 loss at New York and Green Bay’s win at Chicago. New York’s defense is an elite-level unit but Detroit was able to move the football at times and actually outgained the Giants 324-300. Unfortunately for the Lions, they were on the wrong end of some bad bounces with a -2 turnover margin including a key fumble inside New York’s 5-yard line. I however came away impressed with the Lions’ defense as it held its eighth straight opponent to 20 points or less. Sunday’s somewhat misleading result may provide residual betting value moving forward. We’ve already seen this week’s opponent, Dallas, take early money with Detroit now +7.5 road underdogs after opening +7. Read more

NFL Gambling: Bettors shouldn't shy away from the Cleveland Browns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even after a winless start for the Cleveland Browns, there are several reasons to believe this team can be an under-the-radar profit producer the remainder of the season. This is a roster obviously devoid of upper-tier talent. They have a sub-par offensive line, no continuity at the quarterback position, a lack of skill position weapons, and a defense with plenty of holes at all three levels. Defensively, the Browns rank 25th of worse in total yards, passing yards, rushing yards and total points allowed per game. The team’s power rating is about as low as it possibly can be right now as most people have them right there with San Francisco as the worst team in the league. But despite the laundry list of problems, this isn’t a team to shy away from from a betting perspective.

I’m a fan of head coach Hue Jackson who with little to work with is still one of the better play designers in the NFL. He’s been able to squeeze as much as possible out of the offense by using multiple formations, pre-snap shifts and unique personnel packages. On the season, Cleveland is averaging 355 ypg which ranks a respectable 15th. Turnovers and red zone problems have kept Read more

NFL Handicapping: NFC East on the rise

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFC East has been jokingly called the “NFC Least” by pundits for years because of how weak of a division it had become but it is starting to gain some of its tenacity and strength back. This is the only division in the NFL where each team is above .500 and each of the four teams have a realistic shot to capture the division crown. I will examine where they stand following Week 7.

Dallas Cowboys (5-1 SU, 5-1 ATS)
The Dallas Cowboys have shown no ill effects of being without Tony Romo or Dez Bryant the last few games. They've been propelled by the play of two rookies: quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott. The Cowboys are currently third in the NFL in yards per play (6.1) and total yards per game (401.5) thanks to not only Prescott and Elliot but arguably the league's best offensive line. The defense which was thought to be a major area of concern for this team has benefited from the offense sustaining drives and keeping them fresh later in games. The stop unit ranks in the middle of the pack in most defensive categories but have managed to outperform expectations. Dallas comes out of their bye week with a divisional Read more

NFL Gambling: Baltimore Ravens fire offensive coordinator Trestman

10.11.2016     08:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Baltimore Ravens fired offensive coordinator Marc Trestman following Sunday's 16-10 home loss to Washington. The Ravens topped 20 points in only eight of Trestman's 21 games. They currently rank 22nd in total yards per game (338.2) and 28th in yards per play (4.8). Quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg was promoted. Baltimore is currently a +3 road underdog at the New York Giants for Week 6.

"After very careful consideration, I have decided to make a change to our offensive coaching staff and have replaced Marc Trestman with Marty Mornhinweg as offensive coordinator for the rest of the season," coach John Harbaugh said in a statement.
