Sports betting in New Jersey will happen but not as soon as everyone would like

05.17.2018     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pump your brakes, bettors. Talk that New Jersey's Monmouth Park will be taking bets within two weeks have since cooled due to the fact that no one knows exactly what rules and regulations will be put in place. To New Jersey's credit, while eager, there appears to be a "let's make sure we get this right" approach in place.

"Operationally, the sportsbook is built out, with just a little bit of additional equipment to be brought in," William Hill U.S. CEO Joe Asher said. "We need to hire and train front-line employees and get our arms wrapped around any regulations that are going to be put in place."

UPDATE

New Jersey's Monmouth Park is reportedly expected to start taking sports wagers within two weeks. Sportsbook giant William Hill will serve as operator.

"It's my intention, unless somebody stops us, to be up and running in two weeks," Monmouth Park operator Dennis Drazin said during a news conference at the Oceanport track. "If the Legislature or the governor says 'slow down,' I'm gonna listen to them."

Supreme Court votes in favor of legalized sports betting

05.14.2018     09:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By now you've heard the news: The Supreme Court voted to allow states to offer legalized and regulated sports betting. Props need to be given to the state of New Jersey for sticking with it after years of fending off politicians and various sports leagues. The next step is to sit back and see exactly what regulated sports betting will look like. We've discussed at length that if it is going to stick long term, the product needs to mirror what is available offshore, offscreen, and in Las Vegas. Even your recreational weekend bettor will sniff our poor odds and a limited menu. That won't stop people from playing but if the states want to make this a financially viable entity, they can't be dealing -120 juice or posting games an hour before kickoff. Any offshore or local bookmaker will tell you the best business model is to offer as many betting options as possible, keep a few sharp players around just to balance out the square action, and when CRIS posts openers, copy them a few hours later and let your clientele have at it. New bill offers glimpse of how New Jersey sports betting will look

05.01.2018     12:27 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey's sports betting is actually looking less and less like a pipe dream and more like reality. A newly drafted bill includes some of the following provisions: The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement would be in charge. A company must have a brick and mortar casino in order to also offering online wagering. The much maligned "integrity fee" will be included. And no college games or teams associated with New Jersey will be on the board. Now all that's left is for the Supreme Court to say yes, which could come as early as May 14.

No casino or racetrack permitholder shall be permitted to operate or accept wagers via an online sports pool unless a sports wagering lounge is established and has commenced operation in its facility; provided, however, that a sports wagering permitholder may petition the division to commence operation of an online sports pool during the pendency of construction of a sports wagering lounge in its facility. Rumor has it the Supreme Court could decide as early as Tuesday on whether or not New Jersey can offer sports betting. If it passes, Monmouth Park, which already has a 300-seat sportsbook, will reportedly be up and running within two weeks.

“This law will jump-start the casino and racing industries, and that will save thousands of jobs,” former state Sen. Ray Lesniak, who spearheaded the initiative over nearly a decade, told The Post.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Jersey Devils at San Jose Sharks

New Jersey +140 at San Jose O/U 5.5
Recommendation: New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils have been playing some solid hockey on their current road trip. They’ve won three of their first four games on this current road swing and they beat three probable playoff teams in the process notching road victories at Nashville, Vegas and Los Angeles. They were a bit worn down in a 4-2 loss to Anaheim on Sunday night playing the second night of back-to-back games but the Devils have been getting better contributions offensively from players other than Taylor Hall during their recent run while the goaltending for them on most nights from Keith Kinkaid has been really good. San Jose is commanding a significant price tag here laying -160 at home and they have won 4 games in a row entering this contest but the Sharks have done that despite some key injuries on their team. Joe Thornton is out indefinitely with a knee injury, Melker Karlsson and Joonas Donskoi are both banged up and not a sure thing to play tonight and one of their most important defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic departed San Jose’s last game with a chest injury and is Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Jersey Devils at Pittsburgh Penguins

New Jersey at Pittsburgh -205 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Over

The Pittsburgh Penguins are red hot having won six of their last seven games overall and 12 straight at home and their potent offensive ability is a big reason why. Pittsburgh has tallied a whopping 42 goals in their last nine games combined averaging well over four goals per game during this stretch. The Pens already had a bunch of goal scoring options in Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Phil Kessel and Carl Hagelin just to name a few on this loaded squad but they added to it prior to Monday’s trade deadline acquiring center Derick Brassard in a deal with the Ottawa Senators. Brassard brings his 18 goals and 38 points in over 50 games this season to bolster this already lethal Pittsburgh squad even more. The Penguins will face New Jersey’s backup goalie Keith Kinkaid tonight who has been thrust into regular duty with the injury absence of Cory Schneider. Kinkaid has very porous numbers in his career against Pittsburgh entering tonight with a 3.69 GAA and .891 save percentage in 4 games played against the Penguins. Pittsburgh should have the potential to get to their Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Jersey Devils at New York Islanders

New Jersey -120 at NY Islanders O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Over

Betting New York Islanders games over the total has proven to be a meal ticket and season long cash cow for me this season. The Isles enter tonight’s game at 30-12 O/U and none of it is by accident. New York has an offense that doesn’t need many chances or scoring opportunities to produce goals. The Islanders are averaging 3.44 goals per game this season which improves to 3.81 goals per game on home ice. New Jersey is having a brutal time of it in terms of keeping the puck out of their own net. The Devils have surrendered 3+ goals in six straight games and a total of 26 goals allowed during that span so it is not surprising to see them trending 5-1 O/U during this stretch. Cory Schneider tonight’s starting goalie for New Jersey and their #1 netminder has hit a rough patch lately allowing 4 or more goals in five consecutive starts and the Over has cashed in each of those five games. I would expect the NY Islanders to find the back of the net early and often tonight as they have in most of their games throughout the season. On the flip side, for as good Read more

New Jersey working on online sports betting model

10.25.2017     10:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey is wisely preparing for the hopefully legalization of online sports betting. The Supreme Court will hear the case on December 4.

“Nevada does a good job of regulating that,” he said. “I don’t think the technology issues are significant. Delaware has strong regulatory model for online gambling without sports, and so do we.  I don’t see it as troublesome for these states to expand their offering to online betting. Then other states will have to learn from our experiences and make their own determination.”
