College Football Betting Preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders at West Virginia Mountaineers

Texas Tech at West Virginia
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPNU
CRIS Opener: West Virginia -6 O/U 80
CRIS Current: West Virginia -3.5 O/U 72
Recommendation: Over

West Virginia's offense has had no trouble moving the football this season. Yes, they benefitted from a three-game swatch of East Carolina, Delaware State, and Kansas but they also faced Virginia Tech and TCU away from home. Against the Hokies, WVU rolled up 592 yards and topped the 500-yard mark against the Horned Frogs as well. The Mountaineers ran into some difficulty in the red zone which resulted in only 48 points combined in both contests but the yardage was actually conducive to around 75 points.

Through five games, Texas Tech's defense has actually been somewhat of a strength as it has allowed a modest 5.5 yards per play. But those numbers are buoyed by games against FCS Eastern Washington, Houston, and Kansas. Arizona State hung 45 on the Red Raiders and Oklahoma State just missed the 600-yard mark in its 41-34 win. West Virginia is also the most balanced team Tech has faced and the only squad to rank Read more

College Football Betting Preview: San Jose State Spartans at Hawaii Warriors

San Jose State at Hawaii
Saturday, 9 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Hawaii -18 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Hawaii -17 O/U 61
Recommendation: Hawaii

If there's a team ever in need of a bye week, it's the San Jose State Spartans. San Jose State has played seven straight games and finally gets a break after this week's trip to Hawaii. The schedule at times has been daunting but the Spartans did open Mountain West play against three average to below average squads with two of those contests at home. They failed to put up much of a fight in any of the three. Against Utah State, SJSU was outgained by 428 yards. They allowed over 8 yards per play in a 41-13 loss to UNLV. And last week were held to 205 yards in a 27-10 home loss to Fresno State. The Spartans, who are trying to play up-tempo football, have turned the ball over 24 times and have a -9 turnover margin over their last three contests. With a bye week looming, they must first travel to face Hawaii, a team they lost to a home last season, 34-17. It’s a scenario where we could very easily see the Spartans “pack it in” Read more

Texas Tech at Kansas
Saturday, 9 am PT - FS-1
CRIS Opener: Texas Tech -17 O/U 77
CRIS Current: Texas Tech -16 O/U 79
Recommendation: Kansas

Two weeks ago, Kansas played arguably its best game of the season. Trailing early to West Virginia, the Jayhawks battled back and were within one score midway through the fourth quarter before two turnovers let to two Mountaineer scores and a somewhat deceiving 56-34 final. Kansas still covered the number (+23.5) giving them five straight Big XII pointspread wins dating back to last season but I'm far more interested in what they were able to do on the ground. There was a lot of preseason talk about Kansas going to more of an "Air Raid" style offense but they simply don't have to personnel, particularly at the quarterback position, to chuck the ball around 50 times a game and have success. Against WVU, Kansas ran the ball 50 times and finished with 367 yards on 7.3 ypc. This against a team that coming in was allowing 4.4 ypc. Don't expect that type of success on a weekly basis but keeping the ball on the ground, especially in Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nevada Wolf Pack at Fresno State Bulldogs

Nevada at Fresno State
Saturday, 7 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Fresno State -9 O/U 55
CRIS Current: Fresno State -9.5 O/U 61
Recommendation: Fresno State

If you want to be proactive instead of reactive as any serious sportsbettor should strive to do – the time to jump on the Fresno State Bulldogs is right now! The betting markets don’t have a strong sense of where Jeff Tedford’s squad should be power rated right now. Fresno was truly a bottom feeder by the end of the Tim DeRuyter era. They went 20-6 in DeRuyter’s first two years on the job with Derek Carr at QB, but dropped to 4-20 in his last two seasons with two of those four wins coming against FCS level competition. The markets did what they do slow to adjust, but eventually adjusting Fresno waaaaay down from where the program had been for the better part of the previous two decades.

DeRuyter, mercifully, was relieved of his duties by the time November rolled around, and Tedford took over as head coach. Read more

College Football Betting Preview: UNLV Rebels at Ohio State Buckeyes

UNLV at Ohio State
Saturday, 9 am PT - Big Ten Network
CRIS Opener: Ohio State -39.5 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Ohio State -40 O/U 64.5
Recommendation: Over

Eliminate for a second Ohio State's dismal offensive showing vs. Oklahoma in which the Buckeyes posted only 350 total yards and 16 points. Instead, turn your attention to Week 1 in which the Buckeyes rolled up nearly 600 yards and 49 points against Indiana. And last week as well as OSU hung 586 yards on only 69 plays in its win over Army. Bettors should feel confident moving forward that Ohio State's offense is only going to get better as first-year OC Kevin Wilson and Urban Meyer adjust to one another. In the meantime, this is still a top-tier offense, especially when facing lower-tier competition which is exactly what they'll see this weekend in UNLV.

The Rebels were not an especially strong defensive team a season ago even though the schedule came up very light in terms of opposing offenses. UNLV faced only three teams in the top 50 in total offense and in those three games it allowed 50 ppg. This season's Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Stanford Cardinal at USC Trojans

Stanford at USC
Saturday, 5:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: USC -5.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: USC

Key early season conference tilt in the PAC-12 with Stanford heading to USC. The Cardinal got the better of the Trojans last season, 27-10, in a similar conference opener setting. The results should reverse on Saturday as Stanford has the dubious task of coming in off of what I believe to be an unproductive bye week after opening the season with a 62-7 blowout win in Australia over weakling Rice. Last season, Stanford opened with a win over Kansas State, had a bye week, and they dispatched the Trojans in Palo Alto. While that appears similar situation-wise, there are some distinct differences. For one, Stanford never left campus. Their win over Kansas State was at home, followed by a bye, and then another home game vs. USC. And the Wildcats served as a "real" opponent, one that no doubt helped better prepare Stanford for its looming matchup against the Trojans. There was no resistance whatsoever in Week 1 as Rice grades out as one of the worst Read more

College Football Betting: After historic loss, UNLV takes money for matchup at Idaho

09.05.2017     11:30 AM     Printer Friendly
Speaking of ridiculous outcomes, UNLV's loss to FCS Howard is being billed "the biggest upset in college football history." There are a lot of quality FCS teams. Just ask East Carolina who got blasted by top-ranked James Madison, at home, 34-14. But Howard isn't on that level. In fact, even with the victory over the Rebels, Sagarin has the Bison ranked 231st out of 254 FBS/FCS teams. The real question now becomes, do we bet on UNLV this week with it travels to Idaho? To compare, last season, UNLV closed -14.5 vs. Idaho but lost 33-30 in overtime. Now they are catching as much as a touchdown in Moscow. Below is the game's line history as of this afternoon. You can see that the initial money came in the Vandals but since then, UNLV has been the prefered side.

College Football Betting Preview: Troy Trojans at Boise State Broncos

Troy at Boise State
Saturday, 12:45 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Boise State -12.5 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Boise State -10.5 O/U 63.5
Recommendation: Boise State

You likely don't think of the concept "buy low" when it comes to the Boise State Broncos; a team that despite not playing in a power conference has enamored bettors for years. And who can forget the old standby of betting Boise on the "Smurf Turf" no matter what the pointspread? Those days are seemingly over as the Broncos haven't covered a home game in their last eight tries dating back to 2015. And projections for this year are as low as they have been in over a decade as Boise is lined at only 8 wins; the same as MWC up-and-comer Colorado State. But despite last year's "disappointing" 10-win output and even more alarming 3-10 ATS record, their ability to dominate a majority of their opponents should remain. Keep in mind, playing in the far tougher MWC Mountain Division last year, Boise still outgained teams by over 1.5 ypp. Their biggest issue was an outlier -9 turnover margin; +9, +7, +3, +20, and +8 the previous five Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Nevada Wolf Pack at Northwestern Wildcats

Nevada at Northwestern
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Northwestern -23 O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: Northwestern -24 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: Northwestern

Nevada has been in steady decline since the departure of of longtime head coach Chris Ault. Brian Polian managed to take the Wolf Pack to two bowl games but make no mistake, he wasn't going to take the program to Ault-like levels. And it'll be a tall task for first-year head coach Jay Norvell as well. Norvell inherits a squad that was far worse than its 5-7/3-5 record a season ago. Playing in the far weaker MWC West Division, the Wolf Pack were outgained by 1.4 ypp in league play. As for this year's squad, there are 43 new players that must digest completely new systems on both sides of the ball. One such "system" will be the famed/doomed "Air Raid" offense. Offensive coordinator Matt Mumme, son of Hal, says he wants to run 85-90 plays per game. That's a dangerous recipe for a squad that still doesn't have a clear cut starter at quarterback, lost it's top running back, and projects to have one of the weakest defenses Read more

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin's offenses wants to be more dynamic

08.29.2017     12:49 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You don't generally think of "explosiveness" when handicapping Wisconsin's offense. Last season, the Badgers recorded only 23 plays of 30 yards or longer; similar to that of Vanderbilt, South Carolina, and Kansas. This year's group vows to create more "big plays." Saturday's opponent, Utah State, was one of the better teams nationally in 2016 at not allowing big gainers (only 45 plays of 20+ yards).

“We need to get back to being explosive, not just being a defensive team,” redshirt junior offensive lineman Michael Deiter said. “We need to take games over (offensively) and that is something we’ve been working at for two years.”

“Obviously, you can take a defense’s will away by driving 18 plays,” Deiter said. “But you can also take a defense’s will away by going out (scoring) in three plays.
