NCAA Tournament Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Marquette Golden Eagles vs. South Carolina Gamecocks

Marquette vs. South Carolina -1 O/U 142
Recommendation: Under

South Carolina doesn’t play at a snail’s pace, but they are truly an elite defensive team and just as truly an ugly offensive team.  So while this total makes sense given the Gamecocks pace of play, it looks a good notch or two too high for this bettor due to the way the play, not their pace of play.  To put this total in perspective, the Gamecocks last game in the SEC tourney against Alabama, was totaled at 122.5 and it stayed under with room to spare.

When we look at the Gamecocks results from non-conference play against opponents who were not familiar with their intense, physical style, we saw totals that were routinely priced waaaaaaay too high.  They were lined at 156.5 against Monmouth, a game that finished with 120 points in regulation.  Their game against Michigan was totaled at 136.5, finishing with 107 points.  Against Syracuse on a neutral floor at Madison Square Garden, it was another game that stayed 20+ points Under.  Similar class games Seton Hall on a neutral floor, Clemson and Memphis were all Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Big East home courts amongst weakest in the country

02.03.2016     08:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On yesterday's Sportsmemo Podcast we spoke about the overall balance of the Big East as well as the lack of home court strength. On the season, Big East home teams are 21-26 SU -- the second lowest winning percentage of any conference in the country. The posterchild for this dichotomy has been the Providence Friars who have three Big East home losses (Marquette, Seton Hall, and Xavier) and four impressive road victories (Creighton, Butler, Villanova, and Georgetown). The results thus far are probably an outlier as home teams won at a 60% clip the previous two seasons. Three Big East games on the docket for tonight: St. John's at Xavier (-22), Creighton at Villanova (-12), and Marquette at Seton Hall (-7.5).

"It's been an unusual year in college basketball overall. Traditional theories don't seem to be holding true this season, so I guess it stands to reason that the home court hasn't been such a home-court advantage for pretty much everyone in our conference."

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Xavier Musketeers at Marquette Golden Eagles

Xavier -3 at Marquette O/U 137
Recommendation: Under

Xavier has been one of the tougher teams in the country to handicap from a totals perspective. The pace of their games is typically fairly quick but their offense and defense comes and goes on a weekly basis. Tonight, they head to Marquette for a critical game as the Musketeers sit 15-9 and 6-6 in Big East play. The Golden Eagles meanwhile continue to fight despite being short on depth and talent. They've lost five Big East games that came down to the final two minutes of play. Veteran guard Matt Carlino missed Marquette's last game and while they managed to win at Seton Hall, the team shot 1-of-10 from three and netted only 57 points. Carlino (concussion) is questionable tonight and if he is ruled out, expect the market to knock this total down a point or two. But even if he does suit up, Marquette is far more comfortable grinding out games and trying to keep things close. They simply can't match Xavier from an offensive perspective if this game is played in transition. I think the first meeting is very indicative of what we'll see tonight: 124 possessions and 120 points -- and that was Read more

Arizona State at Marquette
Recommendation: Under 61.5 1st half

I’ve had Marquette pegged as an "under" squad. With only eight available players, the Golden Eagles have been forced to slow down the tempo as well as play zone. Their last game vs. Wisconsin featured only 108 possessions and 87 points. Probably won't see that type of extreme tonight but first-year head coach Steve Wojechowski knows that muddying up the game gives his short-handed squad their best chance to win. Also note that guard Deonte Burton left the team and they added 6-11 center Luke Fisher who originally played at Indiana. The Golden Eagles are in desperate need of size in the paint so the recent “transaction” is really addition by subtraction defensively. Arizona State has been playing at a relatively moderate pace but they've been ultra-efficient thus far hitting nearly 41% of their 3's and 53% of their 2's. Not sure however how long they'll be able to keep that up, especially on the road vs. a capable defense. In their last road game at Texas A&M there were only 120 possessions but 143 points. That is an outlier-type performance and if the Sun Read more

Super Bowl XLVIII Prop Bet: Doug Baldwin Total Receiving Yards

Doug Baldwin Total Receiving Yards
Recommendation: Over 39.5

Baldwin’s season averages won’t support this wager – hence some early Under money that drove this total from 40.5 down to 39.5 at several key books.   But with Percy Harvin on the field for the Super Bowl, it should open things up for Baldwin.  And Baldwin has become Wilson’s go-to guy down the stretch.  He had 63+ receiving yards six of the last nine games that he was involved in the offense (he  sat for most of their Week 17 regular season finale), including a six catch, 106 yard effort against the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.  And this is the type of wager we can cash with a single big play!

Last season Teddy Covers and his clients CRUSHED the prop bets with a 10-1 record. For Sunday's Super Bowl XLVIII, he has nine props with analysis and a recommendation on the game's side. Get them all for only $49.

Providence +4.5 at Marquette O/U 131
Recommendation: Providence

Providence is suddenly one of the hottest teams in the Big East. Ed Cooley’s squad have put it all together recently turning a 0-2 start in conference play into a 5-2 mark thanks to their current 5-0 SU and ATS run. That included wins against Georgetown, St. John’s, Creighton, Butler and Xavier. The Friars’ biggest problem earlier this season was failure to defend and provide leading scorer Bryce Cotton with support. Both of those problems have been remedied as we've seen Providence’s trio of LaDontae Henton, Kadeem Batts and Tyler Harris pour in double digit performances throughout the run and more importantly, amped it up defensively holding foes to 66.2 points per game on just 43% shooting from the field and 20.9% from 3-point range.

Marquette isn’t in the greatest of spots. Yes, they are playing at home but the Golden Eagles are coming off not one, not two, but three overtime games in a row and they came out on the losing end of two of those games. The mini break between Saturday’s contest may help them from an energy standpoint but it Read more

Marquette at Xavier -4 O/U 132
Recommendation: Xavier

The Xavier Musketeers have flown under the radar this season despite a 12-3 SU, 9-4 ATS start. And we know they have owned a very strong home court advantage at the Cintas Center at 11-0 SU, 7-2 ATS. Xavier notched a pair of home wins to open Big East play against St. John’s and Butler winning each of those games by 10 and 11 points respectively. The Musketeers have gotten terrific point guard play from Semaj Christon who is averaging 14.7 points per game and 20 assists without committing a single turnover in the team’s last three home games. They’ve also done a good job of preparing for conference play by facing a litany of quality foes in non-conference play: Tennessee (twice), Iowa, USC, Cincinnati and Alabama.

Marquette was put through the ringer themselves in a difficult non-conference schedule with games against Wisconsin, San Diego State, New Mexico and Arizona State. But the Golden Eagles didn’t exactly pass those tests with flying colors. They were 0-4 SU in those games all away from home and when you combine that with their ugly 67-49 road loss at Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Recap: Syracuse shuts down Marquette, advances to Final Four

The first game of the Elite Eight round of the 2013 NCAA Championships was so dismal that you’re afraid writing about it is going to rub off on you, making it impossible to type all weekend.

Marquette was 9 of 28 on two-pointers

Marquette was 3 of 25 on treys

Marquette was 12 of 53 overall, and it felt worse.

Davante Gardner of Marquette was awesome. He showed a complete understanding of how to break a zone…how to shoot from the open spots internally…how to pass to an open man if the defense converges on you. Gardner was 6 of 9 from the floor, including 1 of 1 from three-point land even though he’s 6’8”, 290 pounds.

Marquetters not named Gardner were 4 of 20 on two-pointers

Marquetters not named Gardner were 2 of 24 on treys

Marquetters not named Gardner were 6 of 44 overall, and it felt worse

Marquette vs. Miami-FL -5 O/U 127

Miami center Reggie Johnson (knee) has been ruled out of Thursday's game against Marquette. Johnson had taken on more of a reserve role this season but remained a key contributor on the glass (7 rebounds per game). Marquette was the No. 1 team in the Big East in offensive rebounding percentage (38.4) during league play. The Golden Eagles snagged 31 offensive rebounds in wins over Davidson and Butler.

NCAA Tournament Betting News: Far from pretty, Marquette reaches Sweet Sixteen

Marquette vs. Miami-FL -5.5 O/U 127

Of the remaining 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament, some will argue that Marquette has been the least impressive – and the most fortunate. Head coach Buzz Williams openly admitted that they could have very easily lost both games. In the first round Davidson's win probability was north of 95% with less than two minutes to go yet Marquette found a way to bury a couple of threes and win by one. Similar situation against Butler as the Bulldogs were seemingly in control of the game late only to let it slip away in the waning seconds. But we give credit to Williams who has now led Marquette to three straight Sweet Sixteen appearances. The third game however has proved to be problematic. In 2011, Marquette was crushed by North Carolina, 81-63. And last year, the Golden Eagles met a Read more
