San Diego (Cahill) at Arizona (Godley) -130 O/U 10
Recommendation: Under

San Diego's Trevor Cahill is seemingly always in a state of "reinvention." Last year, he found his niche tossing out of the bullpen for the Cubs where he flashed a 2.74 ERA. This season, he's starting for the Padres and thus far doing a pretty good job. Like some of the highest priced pitchers in the game, Cahill is doing two things extremely well: miss bats and gardner ground balls. In three starts, he's posted 43 swinging strikes, 21 strikeouts and 28 ground balls. He's reportedly incorporated a new cutter/slider type pitch that compliments his main pitch, a sinker. Giving Cahill's history, an injury and/or regression is likely on the horizon but for the time being, he appears to be undervalued.

With Shelby Miller on the shelf, Arizona will turn to fringe arm Zack Godley. Godley doesn't have much of a track record but looked sharp in spring training and prior to his call-up from Triple-A Reno.

“There were some very good candidates that were throwing the ball in Reno,” Lovullo said. “But we trust and believe in their Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates

Chicago (Hendricks) -125 at Pittsburgh (Cole) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

After a slow start to the season, the Chicago Cubs are the hottest hitting team in MLB. The offense has pounded out 53 runs and hit 12 home runs over its last six games. The opposing starters during that span however were all below average. The Cubs will see a more premium arm tonight in Gerrit Cole who two weeks ago tossed 6 innings and allowed only two runs against this lineup. The Cubs though made Cole work as he threw 114 pitches (19 per inning) and given their current form with the quick second look, I project they’ll be more productive at the plate this time around. Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks was pitted against Cole in that start and labored through five innings. Hendricks allowed three runs in five innings with only three strikeouts and two walks. Even more alarming is that was arguably his best outing of the season as lack of command and significantly diminished velocity have resulted in seven walks and four home runs in three starts. The previous matchup ended in a 4-2 Pittsburgh win with both bullpens combining for a near-flawless 7 innings Read more

San Diego (Chacin) at Arizona (Greinke) -160 O/U 9
Recommendation: Arizona

Expecting a reversal of fortunes for San Diego’s Jhoulys Chacin who just five days beat Arizona 1-0 at home. Chacin attributes his success in that contest to using the entirety of his pitching repertoire but examination of his first four starts this season indicates it may be due more to Petco Park. Petco has been renovated to try to improve offense but it’s still favorable to pitchers and in his pair of home starts, Chacin has yet to allow an earned run. He’s thrown an extremely impressive 14.1 innings of shutout ball against the strong offenses of Arizona and the Los Angeles Dodgers. His WHIP in those two games is 0.55, K:BB ratio is 5-1 and his pitches per inning average is an outstanding 13.36. However, Chacin’s pair of road starts have been the polar opposite as he’s exited the mound after only 5 full and 3.1 innings pitched. Those contests were at Atlanta and at LA who combined to get 26 baserunners in those 8.1 (3.1 per inning).

Those numbers spell disaster in Chase Field as Diamondbacks own MLB’s top ranked Read more

MLB Gambling Update: Home runs at Chase Field to plummet

04.24.2017     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Another article discussing the Arizona Diamondbacks' decision to install a humidor. There is still no word on exactly when this will take place but based on projections, once it does, you can expect totals at Chase Field to fall more in line with the rest of the National League. In the meantime, Chase Field's roof will be open for Arizona's four-game series vs. San Diego starting tonight.

“There will be a fairly substantial reduction in the amount of home runs hit at Chase Field. Now, exactly what that number is, I can’t really say with any precision,” said Alan Nathan, a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois who regularly applies physics to baseball. “In either result, it’s going to be substantial, somewhere between a 25 and 50 percent reduction in the number of home runs.”

MLB Handicapping: Los Angeles Dodgers remain tough team to support

04.24.2017     09:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are a handful of teams in MLB that are considered "elite" by the betting markets. Last year's World Series participants, the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians, no doubt qualify. Both teams are a combined 20-16 but down nearly -8 units YTD. You can pick and choose your spots and perhaps get creative with the run-line, but betting on those teams straight up on a nightly basis isn't likely to yield much in the way of profits. The same can be said (and some!) for the Los Angeles Dodgers. This past weekend, without a Clayton Kershaw start, the Dodgers were on average -135 road favorites at Arizona (lost two of three). The average price tag on LA through 19 games in a whopping -178. At that price, you'd need to win 104 games just to break even and even though it’s early, LA doesn’t have the look of a 100-win team. The Dodgers also took big money today, jumping from -120 road favorites vs. San Francisco to as high as -150. All told, Los Angeles is nearly 40 games over .500 and down nearly -24 units since the start of 2015 (-20 units on the run-line). And with Kershaw on the hill, 35-16 -0.1 units.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Yankees at Pittsburgh Pirates

New York (Sabathia) -110 at Pittsburgh (Glasnow) O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

The Pirates couldn’t hit a lick with Sterling Marte in the lineup. Now that he’s been suspended for 80 games, a bad lineup just got worse. Remember, Marte was one of only two outfielders with a +4.5 or higher WAR in each of the last four seasons. Mike Trout is the other. The Pirates have scored two runs in the two games since the suspension was announced.

It's certainly not like this was a particularly potent lineup when Marte was on the field. Pittsburgh has produced two runs or less in half of their last fourteen contests. They’ve yet to have a true offensive explosion, producing more than six runs only once all season.

Pittsburgh has been at their absolute worst offensively against opposing lefties, ranked #28 in MLB in batting average against southpaws (.171) and #29 in OPS (.521). That’s not a tiny sample size either, with a middle-of-the-pack 140 at-bats against lefties thusfar.

CC Sabathia is not a guy I’ll be excited about playing Under the total when it comes to those hot, humid mid-summer Read more
