MLB World Series Handicapping: Betting public prefers underdog Astros and over for tonight's Game 7

11.01.2017     09:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Game 7 of the World Series goes tonight with the Los Angeles Dodgers (Darvish) a -155 home favorite to the Houston Astros (McCullers). Interestingly, Pinnacle opened -110 last night and it peaked at -168 before settling to the current price of -155. According to Sports Options, 58% of "public" bettors are on the Astros while 67% prefer over 7.5. From 1982 to 2011, home teams won nine straight World Series Game 7's. The last two --- San Francisco in 2014 and the Chicago Cubs in 2016 --- went to the road team.

MLB World Series Handicapping: Warm temps expected for Game 1

10.24.2017     09:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The average temperature in Los Angeles this time of year is around 77 degrees. Today's Game 1 of the World Series is expected to be a tad warmer. Current weather reports are saying a high of 100 with gametime temps of 97 and a slight breeze out to right center. With the unpublished but obvious change to baseballs this season, both Dallas Keuchel (21.1%) and Clayton Kershaw (15.9%) allowed career-high FB-to-HR rates. Kershaw hadn't allowed more than 16 home runs in a season but allowed 23 despite throwing "only" 175 IP. Totals at Dodger Stadium went "under" at a 55% clip but only eight games were lined at 7 or below and five of those eight went "over."

MLB Handicapping: A look back at Regular Season Over/Under Wins

10.02.2017     09:48 AM     Printer Friendly
With the MLB regular season complete, let's take a look back at how teams fared in terms of their season over/under wins. Below is a chart with the Westgate's opening numbers and results. Overall, the league went 15-15 O/U. Milwaukee (+16.5) and Arizona (+15.5) were the only two teams to "exceed expectations" by more than 10 wins. Three teams fell short of expectations by 10 or more wins: San Francisco (-18.5), Detroit (-19.5), and the NY Mets (-18.5). And finally, five teams (Boston, LA Angels, Miami, Oakland, and St. Louis all landed within a half win of their total.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

Chicago (Arrieta) +102 at St. Louis (Martinez) O/U 8
Recommendation: Chicago

Here’s the quote from Cubs manager Joe Maddon following Chicago’s blowout win in St Louis last night: “We're definitely arriving at the same mental level we've had the last two seasons. The guys have been there, done that. They know what it's about.” That’s a pretty strong ‘bet-on’ quote for a team priced as underdogs tonight, with a chance to clinch the NL Central title on their biggest rival’s home field with a victory here.

The betting markets are doing what they do – overvaluing the starting pitching matchup at the expense of all other factors. And there’s not much love for Jake Arrieta in the markets right now. Arrieta was sharp in his first start back from a stint on the DL, throwing five innings of one run ball in Milwaukee. Maddon, following that start: “I didn't know what to expect. I thought (Arrieta) was really sharp. I was really surprised at how good he looked.” Chicago’s bullpen behind him is as good as any in baseball, and it’s a fresh pen, working Read more

MLB Gambling News: Dodgers just lost -20 units in less than two weeks

09.08.2017     10:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you've been betting the Los Angeles Dodgers all season, don't fret, you're still up a healthy +15 units. But of late, you've gotten your balls kick in. The Dodgers had the NL West wrapped up months ago and we knew at some point, their historic production would cool off -- mostly likely the last week or two of the regular season when starters routinely rest. But LA's regression has come early in the form of a 1-12 slide. And when you're on average a -185 favorite, you can lose a lot of money in a hurry. In fact, during LA's return-to-earth moment, they've managed to drop just over -20 units including last night as -310 favorites. We'll see if the bleeding stops tonight as LA is a -200 home favorite vs. Colorado.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Seattle Mariners at Baltimore Orioles

Seattle (Gonzalez) at Baltimore (Tillman) -115 O/U 10
Recommendation: Over

The Orioles remain in the hunt for a Wild Card berth as they enter tonight two games out. They've managed to stick around thanks to a impressive surge that has seen the offense average 5.85 runs per game over their last 28 games (17-11). The team's pitching during that span has also been uncharacteristically adequate with a 3.65 ERA. But tonight's starter, Chris Tillman, didn't have much of a hand in the success. In fact, he was recently sequestered to the bullpen only to allow four runs over 5.1 IP in his last start back on Aug. 20. Tillman's numbers are historically bad and with little to no ability to miss bats, no matchup is favorable. Seattle counters with Marco Gonzalez who has yet to complete five innings in any of this five starts. He's been hammered for seven home runs over 20.2 IP despite a pedigree for inducing ground balls. This will also mark a second turn against the Orioles; the first was a ultra-rough 4.1 IP, 9 hits, 4 ER, 1 K effort two weeks ago. It wouldn't shock me to see neither pitcher make it to the fifth inning in this one as we look Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at Cincinnati Reds

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Arrieta) at Cincinnati (Romano) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Chicago -1.5 +100

What’s not to like about the Cubs today? Joe Maddon’s squad is clicking, winners of five straight games, now 25-12 since the All Star Break. Even without Kris Bryant expected in the lineup tonight, the Cubs bats are clicking. They’ve scored 22 runs in the first two games of this series while pounding out six runs or more eight times in their last ten games overall.

That’s bad news for Reds starter Sal Romano. Reds manager Bryan Price has made it clear – he’s not going to pull his young pitchers when they face tough situations, leaving them in to sink or swim. That’s at least part of the reason why Cinci has lost four of Romano’s last five starts by three runs or more. It’s also at least part of the reason why the Reds have allowed six runs or more ten times in their last dozen games. The ‘developing, learning and growing’ part of a young pitcher’s mental makeup isn’t always pretty to watch.

The Reds bullpen behind Romano is completely spent. Three times in Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Nationals at Houston Astros

Washington (Roark) at Houston (Morton)
Recommendation: See analysis

I have some concerns about Washington's Tanner Roark heading into arguably his toughest start of the season with a trip to Houston. Roark's velocity spiked a few weeks back but his last two outings have seen a sudden decrease (91 mph), something he even noted to the media. His recent results look solid with three straight quality starts but the numbers tell a different story with a dismal 11-10 K-to-BB ratio, four home runs allowed, and a very friendly .167 BABIP. For the season, Roark has performed like a below average NL pitcher (4.46 xFIP) and with diminished velocity, he must now navigate an elite AL lineup on the road. Not having Carlos Correa in the lineup has resulted in a decrease in Houston’s offensive production but they are still averaging a solid 4.8 runs without him.

As a team, the Nationals rank fourth in MLB with a 104 wRC+ vs. righties but without Bryce Harper's ridiculous .682 Read more
