MLB Handicapping: Starting pitcher to fade moving forward

06.27.2017     08:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While offense and ERA's remain on the rise, there are a handful of starting pitchers that have skirted around it as we near the All-Star Break. FanGraphs put together a list of arms that are primed for regression in the coming months. At the top of the list are a few obviously candidates. Texas' Andrew Cashner has gone from swing-and-miss to pitch-to-contact arm with a K per 9 rate of only 4.28. His xFIP (5.43) is nearly two runs higher than his ERA (3.50). Chicago's Mike Pelfrey should undoubtedly be a victim of the assumed "juiced ball" movement yet he's carting around a 3.73 ERA. And KC's Jason Vargas continues to give up boatloads of fly balls that rarely leave the yard (6.6% HR/FB rate). He's sitting on a 2.29 ERA.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Tampa Bay Rays at Pittsburgh Pirates

Tampa Bay (Cobb) -105 at Pittsburgh (Williams) O/U 9
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

Different year, same result as the American League continues to dominate the National League in Interleague play. Heading into tonight's action, the AL is 83-59 +20 units of profit on the season. We can grab a near pick 'em price on Tampa Bay and starting pitcher Alex Cobb as the Rays open a series at Pittsburgh. Tampa has won five of its seven interleague games this season and has a very strong track record vs. right-handed pitching with a 31-22 mark and 117 wRC+ which ranks third in MLB. They'll face a very hittable arm in Trevor Williams who as a starter owns a 5.01 ERA over nine starts. Cobb is still trying to regain the form he had in 2014 when he flashed a 2.87 ERA over 27 starts. Arm difficulties and age have left him with slightly better than marginal stuff but his body of work is actually rock solid (4.05 ERA, 4.15 FIP). He's primed for success tonight against a mediocre lineup in a National League park. Money in this one should continue to trickle in on road side. At current pick 'em price, that's the preferred play.

Chicago (Arrieta) -130 at Miami (Locke) O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Miami’s Jeff Locke remains a fringe National League arm; capable of popping for the occasional strong start but very hittable otherwise. He allowed 1 run and fanned seven in his first outing of the year against Arizona but has since failed to record a quality start (3 starts, 14 IP, 5.79 ERA). One of those opponents was the Cubs who patiently picked him apart in a 10-2 victory (4.2 IP, 4 BB, 3 ER). Locke's "metrics" (3.54 FIP) indicate he's pitched better than his 4.58 ERA, but considering the offensive boom MLB is currently enjoying, that ERA is likely who he'll really be over a larger sample size.

Chicago’s Jake Arrieta has been consistently mediocre this season. On May 3, Arrieta's ERA sat at 4.63. A month and a half later, it's 4.64. Virtually every metric has regressed including groundball rate than is nearly 10% lower than last season. Yes, the strikeouts are there (9.9 K's per 9) but without a top-tier defense and more balls hit in the air (that thus leave the yard), the reality is Arrieta is an average NL starter. His last start vs. Read more

St. Louis (Leake) -160 at Philadelphia (Hellickson) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: St. Louis/Over

Currently ranked among the top 10 qualified starter with a negative ERA-FIP differential (4.91 ERA-5.91 FIP), Philadelphia's Jeremy Hellickson is no doubt fortunate his ERA isn't higher. Like his counterpart tonight, Mike Leake, Hellickson pitched out of his mind the first part of the season (5 starts, 1.80 ERA) but has come crashing down with a near 7.00 ERA over his last nine starts. During that span of 47 innings, the veteran righty has a 23-20 K-to-BB ratio while allowing 13 home runs. He's currently as bad a starter as there is in the National League. Speaking of regression, after posting a sub-2.00 ERA through his first nine starts, Leake has seen his ERA rise well over a run thanks to a 6.20 ERA (24.2 IP, 17 ERs). His overall performance this season, however, is far more "real" than that of Hellickson. Leake currently owns career bests in both groundball rate (54.9%) and swinging strike rate (8.2%). Not to mention that stretch of regression came against four of the NL's better offenses (Cubs, Reds, Dodgers, Brewers). Here he faces a Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco (Moore) at Colorado (Hoffman) O/U 11
Recommendation: Colorado -1.5

Jeff Hoffman has been one of the many positive stories from an unexpectedly solid Colorado Rockies pitching staff that has led the team to a 42-26 record. Hoffman sports a 2.33 ERA over four starts; all them Colorado wins by two runs or more. Along with the stellar ERA is a 0.74 WHIP, 34 strikeouts, and only three walks. The San Francisco Giants have endured a dismal season that is now 17 games below .500 after yesterday's 7-2 loss to Kansas City. The always problematic lefty Matt Moore takes the mound tonight in what can only be considered a precarious situation. Moore has surrendered nine runs in his last 10 innings of work and he’s been at his worst on the highway with a 7.94 ERA. Not surprisingly, the Giants are just 1-6 in Moore’s seven road starts. Moore’s track record at Coors Field is equally unimpressive has he allowed 12 runs in his previous two starts. The Colorado bullpen has been terrific all season and has the arms to preserve a lead in the latter innings. The moneyline price is a tad rich but it’s worth noting Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Boston Red Sox at Philadelphia Phillies

Boston (Johnson) -125 at Philadelphia (Hellickson) O/U 10
Recommendation: Boston

Despite being 21-42 as a team, the Philadelphia Phillies are 9-4 when Jeremy Hellickson toes the rubber. Hellickson started the season strong (1.80 ERA first five starts) but has been exposed in a big way of late. Over his last eight outings, Hellickson has been pounded to the tune of a 6.43 ERA and 12 home runs allowed. He also sports an alarming 22/17 K-to-BB ratio. He's simply not fooling anyone and is tasked with facing an above average American League lineup tonight.

Boston is priced rather cheaply tonight because unproven rookie Brian Johnson is on the bump. Johnson, a former first round pick, has been serviceable with a 3.44 ERA and 16/4 K-to-BB ratio in three starts. And his Minor League stats (2.61 ERA over 471 IP), suggest he'll be able to get MLB hitters out at a decent rate. My issue with Johnson is that he's not a big swing-and-miss arm and tends to give up a lot of fly balls. That's not ideal tossing in Fenway against the American League but in this spot, even in a hitter friendly park, he has a good chance to post a Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers at Cleveland Indians

Los Angeles (McCarthy) +140 at Cleveland (Kluber) O/U 8
Recommendation: Los Angeles

The Cleveland Indians host the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight at Progressive Field. Corey Kluber takes the hill for the Tribe; his ninth start of the year and third since being activated from the DL. Last time out, Kluber went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts against the White Sox. It was a very favorable matchup and the second time this season Kluber rolled through Chicago's lineup. In fact, if you eliminate Kluber's two outings against the White Sox, his ERA is an alarming 5.50 over seven starts.

Brandon McCarthy doesn't always get the respect he deserves because he's so injury prone. But when healthy, his stuff grades out as well above average. Note that his average exit velocity against, according to Statcast, is 84.4 mph. That ranks seventh-best out of 146 starters with at least 100 balls put in play. McCarthy has been throwing a cutter at a much higher rate this year which has significantly helped his ability to tame left-handed bats.

Cleveland is one of the most over-priced teams in Read more
