MLB Gambling News: Arizona Diamondbacks to use humidor at Chase Field

02.15.2018     09:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This should make for an interesting handicap. The Arizona Diamondbacks are finally going to install a humidor which some think will suppress home runs and this scoring by a significant amount. Below are the over/under, average total, and average runs scored results at Chase Field over the last five seasons.

2017: 42-34-7 O/U, avg. total 9.4, avg. rpg 9.95
2016: 50-28-3 O/U, avg. total 9.0, avg. rpg 11.16
2015: 39-35-5 O/U, avg. total 8.4, avg. rpg 9.11
2014: 36-41-4 O/U, avg. total 8.3, avg. rpg 8.98
2013: 34-46-1 O/U, avg. total 8.5, avg. rpg 8.40

“I am very comfortable saying that, with the humidor running at 50 percent and 70 degrees, there will a reduction in home run production at Chase by 25 to 50 percent,” Nathan concluded. “While it would be nice to come up with a more precise prediction, we should not lose sight of the principal takeaway that the installation of a humidor will reduce the number of home

Leagues want a piece of legalized sports betting

01.24.2018     10:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In terms of the five major sports bet on in the United States (NBA, MLB, NFL, CFB and CBB) there is simply no way of knowing the actual size of the market. What we do know is a vast majority of the money being wagered is either offshore and or offscreen (i.e. local bookmakers). Various sports leagues appear to be gearing up for some sort of regulation and of course, they want a piece. The NBA says it wants 1 percent of every bet made. That's a fine idea but 1% of every bet made at U.S. regulated sportsbooks would be peanuts compared to what has and will continue to be wagered on offshore. Under the proposed format (increased juice, limits, credit cards and the potential to be taxed), there is simply no reason to think serious bettors, who account for a vast majority of the world wide handle, are going to play at an U.S. regulated online sportsbook. Maybe the leagues already understand that. But we can’t help but get the feeling that this projected “explosion” of sports betting, should it be legalized, is not Read more

NHL Gambling: Vegas Knights continue to rake in profits

01.04.2018     10:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This can't last, can it? The expansion Vegas Knights have taken the betting world by storm with an incredible +20.5 units of profit through only 38 games. That's an ROI of +48.6%! To compare, the Milwaukee Brewers were the most profitable moneyline team in MLB last season at +18 units. Their ROI was +9.9%. Like a lot of expansion teams, the betting markets didn't give the Knights much of a chance with a league-low season over/under point total of 68.5 heading into the season. Vegas already has 58! Oddsmakers have started to adjust as the Knights have closed favorites in eight of their last 13 games. For the season, Vegas' average moneyline price is +119.

MLB World Series Handicapping: Betting public prefers underdog Astros and over for tonight's Game 7

11.01.2017     09:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Game 7 of the World Series goes tonight with the Los Angeles Dodgers (Darvish) a -155 home favorite to the Houston Astros (McCullers). Interestingly, Pinnacle opened -110 last night and it peaked at -168 before settling to the current price of -155. According to Sports Options, 58% of "public" bettors are on the Astros while 67% prefer over 7.5. From 1982 to 2011, home teams won nine straight World Series Game 7's. The last two --- San Francisco in 2014 and the Chicago Cubs in 2016 --- went to the road team.

MLB World Series Handicapping: Warm temps expected for Game 1

10.24.2017     09:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The average temperature in Los Angeles this time of year is around 77 degrees. Today's Game 1 of the World Series is expected to be a tad warmer. Current weather reports are saying a high of 100 with gametime temps of 97 and a slight breeze out to right center. With the unpublished but obvious change to baseballs this season, both Dallas Keuchel (21.1%) and Clayton Kershaw (15.9%) allowed career-high FB-to-HR rates. Kershaw hadn't allowed more than 16 home runs in a season but allowed 23 despite throwing "only" 175 IP. Totals at Dodger Stadium went "under" at a 55% clip but only eight games were lined at 7 or below and five of those eight went "over."

With the MLB regular season complete, let's take a look back at how teams fared in terms of their season over/under wins. Below is a chart with the Westgate's opening numbers and results. Overall, the league went 15-15 O/U. Milwaukee (+16.5) and Arizona (+15.5) were the only two teams to "exceed expectations" by more than 10 wins. Three teams fell short of expectations by 10 or more wins: San Francisco (-18.5), Detroit (-19.5), and the NY Mets (-18.5). And finally, five teams (Boston, LA Angels, Miami, Oakland, and St. Louis all landed within a half win of their total.

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at St. Louis Cardinals

09.26.2017     09:55 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Arrieta) +102 at St. Louis (Martinez) O/U 8
Recommendation: Chicago

Here’s the quote from Cubs manager Joe Maddon following Chicago’s blowout win in St Louis last night: “We're definitely arriving at the same mental level we've had the last two seasons. The guys have been there, done that. They know what it's about.” That’s a pretty strong ‘bet-on’ quote for a team priced as underdogs tonight, with a chance to clinch the NL Central title on their biggest rival’s home field with a victory here.

The betting markets are doing what they do – overvaluing the starting pitching matchup at the expense of all other factors. And there’s not much love for Jake Arrieta in the markets right now. Arrieta was sharp in his first start back from a stint on the DL, throwing five innings of one run ball in Milwaukee. Maddon, following that start: “I didn't know what to expect. I thought (Arrieta) was really sharp. I was really surprised at how good he looked.” Chicago’s bullpen behind him is as good as any in baseball, and it’s a fresh pen, working Read more

MLB Gambling News: Dodgers just lost -20 units in less than two weeks

09.08.2017     10:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you've been betting the Los Angeles Dodgers all season, don't fret, you're still up a healthy +15 units. But of late, you've gotten your balls kick in. The Dodgers had the NL West wrapped up months ago and we knew at some point, their historic production would cool off -- mostly likely the last week or two of the regular season when starters routinely rest. But LA's regression has come early in the form of a 1-12 slide. And when you're on average a -185 favorite, you can lose a lot of money in a hurry. In fact, during LA's return-to-earth moment, they've managed to drop just over -20 units including last night as -310 favorites. We'll see if the bleeding stops tonight as LA is a -200 home favorite vs. Colorado.
