NBA Gambling News: Cleveland can't guard and thus can't cover pointspreads

01.12.2018     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like were in the midst of a mid-season Cleveland Cavaliers swoon. After ripping off an 18-1 run, the Cavs started a hellacious stretch of 10 out of 12 on the highway. They took down the Wizards on December 17 but proceeded to lose seven of their next 10 while covering only one pointspread during that span. The last two efforts have been particularly alarming. On Monday they were hammered at Minnesota, 127-99, and managed to top it with a 133-99 loss to Toronto last night. Cleveland currently sports the worst ATS record in the league at 12-28-1. Tonight's game at Indiana marks the finale of the road swing. The Cavs opened -1 and were bet up to -2.5.

"We've got to be better," Lue said after the Cavs lost for the seventh time in the past 10 games. "We know that. But until we play better defensively, I think offensively sharing the basketball, everyone on the same page -- and if guys have agendas, we've got to get rid of our agendas and play the right way."

Asked what he meant by "agendas," Lue

NBA Gambling News: Cleveland vows to shore up leaky defense

11.01.2017     09:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A little early in the NBA season for a "team meeting", no? The Cleveland Cavaliers are 3-4 (1-6 ATS) and 28th in the league in defensive efficiency. They've allowed 115 ppg over their last five games; three of which came against New York, Brooklyn, and Chicago. After two off days, the Cavs (-10) play host to Indiana tonight. The total was bet down from 218.5 to 216.5.

“The slow start that we’ve had prompted us to just all get on the same page and kind of figure out what we need to do,” center Kevin Love said. “I feel like we can get in better shape, that’s going to help us on the defensive end. Communication, energy and just getting the new guys adjusted. So time will tell how it’s going to play out, but we have a lot of really good positive energy from today, so, it was a great practice.”

NBA Handicapping: Players resting and big line moves highlight final day of regular season

04.12.2017     11:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's the final day of the NBA regular season and while nearly every playoff seed and matchup has been determined the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference is still up go grabs. Chicago, who plays host to Brooklyn, own the tiebreaker over Miami, who plays host to Washington. Unlike most lottery teams, the Nets haven't been in tank mode due to their draft pick being sent elsewhere. However, they decided tonight would be a good opportunity to rest some of their key players. This pushed the Bulls up from -9 to -14.5 favorites. The Wizards are sitting a bunch of guys as well but even if the Heat win (-8.5 to -11.5), a Bulls victory means Miami is out. Indiana sits a game ahead of both Chicago and Miami and should have any easy go of it against an Atlanta squad that is resting its starters. The Pacers were bet up from -7.5 to -14.5.

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Washington Wizards at Indiana Pacers

Washington at Indiana +3 O/U 215
Recommendation: Indiana

I haven’t bet against Washington since the calendar turned to 2017.  But this is the spot to fade the Wizards, and the markets seem to be convinced that the Pacers are going to go into the All-Star Break in the midst of a six-game skid.  That gives us ample value to back Indiana as a home dog this evening.

In theory, this is a great spot for Washington.  The Pacers have lost five straight, including a defensive no-show in Cleveland last night; the fifth straight game that Indiana has allowed at least 110 points.  Meanwhile, the Wizards are rested and ready – they’ve only played once since last Friday, a blowout win over OKC that was garbage time by the middle of the third quarter.

But as we clearly saw last night with the Houston-Miami game, an extended rest BEFORE the All-Star Break is not necessarily a good thing – teams lose their focus.  The Rockets were in the exact same spot at the Wizards – coming off a rare, extended rest, having played only one game since last week, a blowout win.  Washington has been as Read more

Indiana at Washington -5.5 O/U 214.5
Recommendation: Washington

John Wall and Bradley Beal did a very classy thing following the conclusion of their 17-0 SU run at home, losing to the Cavs in overtime on Monday.  The Wizards backcourt duo put together an Instagram post thanking Washington’s fans and promising another win streak upcoming: “We just wanted to thank all of the Wizards fans or giving us one of the best homecourts in the NBA.  The atmosphere last night was amazing, the best since we’ve been in DC…we’re in this together so we’re counting on you to continue that tremendous support on Friday when we look to start a new streak…”

The Wizards weren’t sharp at Brooklyn following their loss to the Cavs; lucky to escape with an overtime win.  Head coach Scott Brooks: “Two things happened tonight: We gambled because we wanted to go for steals for layups, and we didn't box out. Brooklyn got offensive rebounds, and that was the game. That gave them a chance every time we had the lead by 10 to 12 points. ... We're glad we got the win, but we still have to Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Indiana Pacers at Portland Trail Blazers

Indiana at Portland -7.5 O/U 209.5
Recommendation: Portland

The Blazers have been a major early season disappointment.  After finishing with the #5 seed in the West last year, Portland is just 9-10 SU, 6-13 ATS to open the new campaign.  That includes six losses in their last eight games.  Twice in their last three contests, the Blazers have allowed their opponent to score 130+ against them!

Less than 12 hours following the latest loss – at home against Houston on Sunday – head coach Terry Stotts had his team back on the practice floor.  All Star point guard Damian Lillard: “This is the first time we've had a real practice in what seems like forever. It was good for us to try to sharpen up, (to have) coaches challenge us. It's to the point now where our pride has to kick in. We have to show how much we actually care about ... being better defensively."

Lillard continued: "We scored 125 points against Cleveland. That's a lot of points to score and not win a game. Right now, we're not getting it done on the defensive end. That's what it comes down to.”

Philadelphia +11.5 at Indiana O/U 210
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Indiana has no business as double digit chalk right now, even against the worst team in the NBA.  Don’t listen to my word – let Paul George tell you himself: “We’re all out of whack. There’s no trust, there’s no chemistry, there’s no belief. We’re kind of just lifeless right now.”

This team bought into Frank Vogel’s message throughout his tenure as Indiana’s head coach.  The first few weeks of the Nate McMillan era hasn’t produced anywhere near that same level of internal chemistry.  McMillan is trying to cobble together cohesive rotations following an offseason of significant personnel turnover, with a new point guard in Jeff Teague, a new starting wing in Thaddeus Young, and a new top scorer off the bench in Al Jefferson, among others.

The betting markets recognized those names; guys with a recent track history of success elsewhere, and have been convinced that the Pacers are primed to be a team on the rise.  But those big name veterans aren’t playing a lick of Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Detroit Pistons at Chicago Bulls

Detroit at Chicago -2.5 O/U 204.5
Recommendation: Chicago

The Bulls aren’t likely to have Derrick Rose or Taj Gibson available tonight for their showdown with the Pistons.  That’s good news for Bulls bettors, not bad!  Without Rose in the lineup, this pointspread gets deflated into a ‘SU win should equal a pointspread cover’ range.  And the Bulls have certainly proven adept this season at cashing winning bets without one of their key players on the floor.

And Fred Hoiberg’s squad has looked squarely into the depths of the abyss and come out swinging.  Chicago suffered a four game skid at the wrong time, falling 2.5 games out of the final playoff spot in the East, with only nine games remaining.  The Bulls gut check moment came against the Pacers on Tuesday, when they held Indiana scoreless over the last 3+ minutes of gametime and won on a Jimmy Butler jumper with 3.7 seconds left.   They followed that up by rallying from 14 down late in the 3rd quarter to beat Houston on Thursday.

Coach Hoiberg: “I think the biggest thing is those guys went out there and played Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Western Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA All Star Game is in the rear view mirror now, leaving bettors with a two month window between now and the beginning of the Playoffs.  Just about every team has approximately thirty games remaining on their regular season schedule.  The Warriors remain the favorite to win the title when June rolls around, with Cleveland and San Antonio also priced in a 3:1 or lower range to win the championship.

But if you’ve been reading my Wiseguy Report for the last decade, you know that I’m not a big fan of future book wagers.  This week’s article isn’t going to recommend a change that long term betting philosophy.  In my opinion, the real money to be made betting the NBA is to find the teams that are being priced incorrectly by the betting markets and bet on (or against) those teams repeatedly; in every reasonable situation, until the betting markets catch up.

I’m going to focus on the Western Conference this week; next week I’ll break down the East.  As we come out of the break, I’ve identified my top ‘Bet-On’ team down the stretch for the West – the Denver Nuggets.  This Read more

NBA Handicapping: Pacers claim to have practiced defense after historically bad effort

01.19.2016     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's hard to allow 247 points in regulation in back-to-back games, especially when neither opponent had Golden State printed on its jersey. That's the situation for Indiana as they limp into tonight's road game at Phoenix having allowed 118 to Washington and 129 last time out to Denver. This isn't the first time the Pacers stank up the joint defensively and called for a bounceback effort. Back in mid-December, they coughed up 131 in a loss to Warriors and then took down Miami 96-83 next time out. Of course the game following that, Indiana was blown out by Detroit, 118-96.

A day after describing his team’s defensive performance as “embarrassing,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel ran a “spirited” practice dedicated to that end of the floor.

“I thought we had better focus,” George said. “We were definitely tied
