MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates

Philadelphia (Hellickson) at Pittsburgh (Williams)
Recommendation: Over

The days of Jeremy Hellickson’s strong start to the season for the Philadelphia Phillies are numbered. Hellickson sports a decent 3.71 ERA but it doesn’t correlate to his xFIP which is nearly two full runs higher at 5.56. His strikeouts per 9 innings has declined sharply from last season going from 7.3 to 3.7 and his swinging strike rate has followed a similar pattern going down from 10.8% last season to 7.4%. He’s also seen an uptick in his hard hit ball pct. which indicates opposing hitters are squaring up his pitches more successfully than a year ago. Hellickson has surrendered 12 runs in his last 13.1 innings of work and has failed to pitch more than 6 innings in four straight starts which is bad news for a Phillies bullpen that is not only bad with a 5.04 collective bullpen ERA but has been taxed with Phillies starting pitchers on a 7-game streak of not getting past six innings in any start. Pittsburgh’s lineup has climbed their way out of a recent funk by scoring 30 runs in their last five games combined and I expect them to do Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Baltimore Orioles at Washington Nationals

Baltimore (Bundy) +105 at Washington (Cole) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

The Baltimore Orioles let one slip away last night against the Washington Nationals who turned a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 walk-off win. The good news for Baltimore is that they have responded well off defeats this season with a 7-3 mark in 10 games after a loss. And they have the right pitcher on the mound for a bounceback effort tonight in Dylan Bundy. Bundy has been solid entering tonight's game with a 2.17 ERA including a 2.33 ERA mark on the road. Baltimore is 6-1 in his seven starts this season and he notched the victory in his lone previous outing against Washington last season pitching 6 innings of 2-run ball. On the flip side, Washington’s AJ Cole is nothing more than a temporary spot starter. Cole's numbers are less than average with a poor 6.63 ERA in four starts at Triple-A prior to his call-up. He's endured some very alarming control and command difficulties issuing 4.7 walks per 9 innings in the minors. Those problems carried over to his first start for the Nationals against Philadelphia with Cole offering up four free passes in just 6 Read more

Baltimore (Wilson) at Boston (Kendrick) -120 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

Tonight’s starters Tyler Wilson for Baltimore and Kyle Kendrick for Boston are making their first starts of the season and if you’ve seen their numbers to this point, it's hard to be impressed with either arm. Wilson has made five appearance out of the bullpen and shows a 5.40 ERA. Prior to that, he made a pair of starts down in Triple-A that resulted in a 5.14 ERA to go along with an alarming 5.1 walks per 9 innings. It wasn’t any better for Kendrick during his stint at Triple-A with a 6.00 ERA in four starts at Pawtucket. In those four outings, he surrendered seven home runs over the span of only 27 innings. With neither pitcher projected to go beyond five innings both bullpens are likely to get involved early. Last night Kevin Gausman was ejected in the 2nd inning and Drew Pomeranz only worked 5.1 innings as both relief units were worked hard. Boston closer Craig Kimbrel was also asked to throw making back-to-back appearances. The first three games of the series all went under the total but with two ultra-fringe starters on the bump, expect Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York at Ottawa -105 O/U 5
Recommendation: Ottawa

My clients and I cashed several tickets on the Ottawa Senators in their opening round win over the Boston Bruins. This is in my opinion and undervalued squad and one I’ll be actively looking to back as the square off against the New York Rangers. On the surface, New York’s 4-2 series win over Montreal looks impressive but the fact remains they scored only 11 goals. Their success had a lot to do with Montreal’s totally inept offense that couldn’t buy a goal and found it very difficult to gain the blue line and generate scoring chances. Unlike the Canadiens, the Senators have offensive firepower. Bobby Ryan, Kyle Turris, Derick Brassard, Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman and Clarke MacArthur all registered multiple points against the Bruins. And star defenseman Erik Karlsson was phenomenal along the blue line as he piled up 7 points. The Rangers received outstanding goaltending from Henrik Lundqvist against the Canadiens but he really wasn’t challenged in the way I expect in this series. Ottawa also proved on multiple occasions against Boston that it could Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: San Jose Sharks at Edmonton Oilers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Jose at Edmonton -130 O/U 5
Recommendation: Edmonton

I picked the Edmonton Oilers to win this series and even after the team suffered through an embarrassing 7-0 Game 4 road loss, my opinion remains. The series is tied 2-2 and the Oilers will enjoy home ice advantage with the series now down to a best-of-three. Edmonton is 10-1 in its last 11 home games which is a track record that shouldn’t be discounted. And they will almost assuredly come out of the gate with energy following that horrendous Game 4 loss. San Jose’s durability and its energy level may be challenged the remainder of the series. The Sharks, who went went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, are an aging team. I think the longer this series goes, the edge swings toward Edmonton's youth which has been able to make San Jose look a step slow for portions of this series. It’s worth noting San Jose has a porous 2-7 road record in its last nine road games and I think they are running into a buzzsaw tonight with the Oilers looking to bounce back on home ice. I expect Edmonton to do just that and will lay the moderate price with the home chalk.
