College Basketball Betting Free Play: Loyola-Chicago Ramblers at Florida Gators

Loyola-Chicago at Florida -16.5 O/U 151
Recommendation: Under

After running up and down the floor and hanging 100+ three out of its four games, Florida finds itself losers of two straight. The main culprit was defense as Duke and Florida State netted 1.13 and 1.12 points per possession, respectively. And despite winning, Florida's two opponents prior to that, Stanford and Gonzaga, also posted 1.1 ppp or more. Not having John Egbunu patrolling the paint hurts, but he missed time last year and the Gators still finished fifth in the country in defensive efficiency. The bottom line is Florida fell in love with trying to outscore foes and head coach Mike White was quick to call them on it.

“You guys have heard me use the word soft with this team,” White said late Monday night. “And we use the word with our team every day and it reared its ugly head tonight. Tonight was the epitome of soft.”

Ironically, nearly the exact same thing occurred last season when the Gators dropped two straight to both Duke and Florida State. The key however was they were able to fire back in a big way the next Read more

College Football Betting Preview: UAB Blazers at Florida Gators

UAB at Florida
Saturday, 1 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener: Florida -10.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Florida -10.5 O/U 48
Recommendation: Over

Not much of anything to play for other than pride in this matchup as UAB heads to Florida for a late season non-conference affair. The Blazers have been on of the biggest overachievers in the country this season with a 7-3 record (8-2 ATS). But there isn't much on the line their last two games with bowl eligibility wrapped up and North Texas having already clinched the West Division. The Gators, who fired head coach Jim McElwain two weeks ago, have lost five straight and will obviously not be participating in the postseason. Their focus is likely on not getting embarrassed at home against a mid-major.

Interesting angle to consider here is the schedule for both squads. UAB has not played a single Power 5 team this season. In fact, they haven't faced a team inside Sagarin's top 100; North Texas (100th) their "toughest" opponent. Florida meanwhile has not played a single non-Power 5 squad. Vanderbilt (97th) was their weakest foe Read more

College Football Betting Update: Florida goes with Zaire vs. Missouri

11.03.2017     08:52 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

We can't help but feel that Florida is either going to play its best game of the year and beat Missouri by 30 or trail 21-0 before the end of the first quarter. Either way, they'll do so with former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire, who for whatever reason has been buried on the depth chart behind two guys who can barely complete a forward pass.

“Malik is the starting quarterback for this upcoming game at Missouri,” said Shannon in a statement. “This is his opportunity to get this team where it needs to be and not to be satisfied just because he’s the starter.

“Today is an opportunity for him to run the offense and understand the expectations that we have for him. This is not a time for him to feel comfortable and feel like he’s made it. We want him to keep grinding and understand that competition is very

College Football Betting: Bettors look to fade Florida after McElwain firing

10.30.2017     09:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tough schedule, a couple of coin flip losses...it doesn't mean much when you get worked over by a rival 42-7. It also doesn't help when you pull out a potentially fake woe-is-me card. Florida decided to part ways with head coach Jim McElwain after the Gators dropped their third straight game. Defensive coordinator Randy Shannon will take over for the remainder of the season. The Gators are currently +3.5 road underdogs (opened +1.5) to Missouri for Saturday.

We don't often play the Guess Who's Gonna Get Fired game but there are going to be a lot of head coaching gigs available in the SEC this offseason.

Florida - McElwain fired
Tennessee - Jones a lock to be fired
Arkansas - Bielema a near lock to be fired
Texas A&M - Sumlin a near lock to be fired
Ole Miss - Luke likely passed over for bigger name
LSU - Orgeron could be fired depending on how season plays out
Missouri - Odom could save job with longshot bowl berth

College Football Gambling: Florida claims it will play faster vs. Texas A&M

10.11.2017     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
"Yo, man. I didn't sign up for this shit" was undoubtedly said by no fewer than 80 percent of Florida's offensive unit following last week's 17-16 loss to LSU. The Gators picked up a respectable 5.59 yards per play but managed only 54 snaps. A "lack of communication" has been the most common excuse but snapping the ball every 29 seconds in college football is without question premeditated. While not a full-on revolt, various players voiced their opinions on how the offense needs to pick up the pace. The Gators are -3 home chalk with a total of 52.5 vs. Texas A&M.

“I think we need to speed up the tempo on offense,” offensive lineman Tyler Jordan said Monday. “Some series you’ll see it, we get up to the ball and we’re rolling, we move the ball efficiently. And there’s other series where we’re slow getting to the ball, and then the series doesn’t turn out as well as we wanted it to.”

“Getting the play into the game, getting (it) from the sideline to Feleipe so Feleipe can get it

College Football Betting News: LSU nears full-on dumpster fire status

10.03.2017     11:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You can't make this stuff up. Already feeling the heat after a loss to Mississippi State and a lackluster showing vs. Syracuse, LSU head coach Ed Orgeron felt the need to stick his nose where it clearly didn’t belong and admitted to "offering suggestions" on how LSU should run its offense in the second half of last week's loss to Troy. This of course after Orgeron brought in highly respected offensive coordinator Matt Canada and told Canada the offense is all yours heading into the season. The offense, while far from smooth, hasn't been that bad (6.4 yards per play). And despite being under constant pressure, quarterback Danny Etling has been serviceable (150.8 QB Rating, 35th nationally). Yet, they (we assume Orgeron), insist on inserting QB of the future Myles Brennan at seemingly inopportune times. Add it all up and voila, a home loss to a Sun Belt team. Orgeron now claims he won't intervene with Canada who we'd love to hear from but won't because LSU coordinators haven't spoken to the media since the preseason. Next up for the Tigers, a Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Florida Gators at Kentucky Wildcats

Florida at Kentucky
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - SEC Network
CRIS Opener: Florida -2.5 O/U 47
CRIS Current: Florida -1.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Kentucky

Heading into the season, Kentucky talked all about playing at a fast tempo and putting up big points on a weekly basis. Three games into the season and the Wildcats have failed miserably at that claim and are ironically a better team for it. Fifth-year head coach Mark Stoops finally got the message that in order to compete in the SEC, you have to value the football, run the football, and play solid defense. Through three games, UK is +4 in turnover margin, owns a 121-70 run/pass ratio, and is allowing only 346.7 ypg. The competition comes up a little light (Southern Miss, Eastern Kentucky and South Carolina), particularly on the offensive end, but Saturday's opponent is another foe where Kentucky's newly-adopted strategy could thrive.

For seven of the eight quarters it has played, Florida's offense has been nothing short of abysmal. The Gators managed 11 rushing yards vs. Michigan and if you eliminate their Hail Read more

College Football Betting News: Florida says all three quarterbacks could see time vs. Michigan

08.24.2017     09:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When a team says it plans on playing two quarterbacks, it generally means neither signal caller is good enough to earn the full-time job. When a team says it plans on playing three quarterbacks, it without question means no one is currently good enough to earn the full-time job. Of course, Florida could be (is probably) playing it somewhat coy as it preps for its Week 1 matchup vs. Michigan. Luke Del Rio, who was lackluster at best last year (118.6 QB Rating), even when healthy, is in the mix. So is Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire. Then there is Feleipe Franks who is poised to be the starter of the future. The Gators haven't ranked in the top six of the SEC in team QB rating since 2009 when a guy named Tebow was taking snaps.

"Ultimately the guy that the team moves with the best," he said. "The guys that create positive plays on third down and get the ball in the end zone. That's kind of where we're at."

College Football Betting News: Florida suspends seven for season opener vs. Michigan

08.14.2017     07:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of the disadvantages of playing an actual game in Week 1 and not some patsy from the Sun Belt is that there's always a chance for some good old fashion offseason suspensions. Florida announced that it will be without the services of seven players including the team's top offensive weapon, wide receiver, Antonio Callaway. Frustrating situation for summer bettors as there was a lot of pro-Gator money. Michigan opened -5 and was bet down to -2.5 before sportsbooks took the game off the board.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing," head coach Jim McElwain said in a statement, though he did not elaborate on the reason for their suspension. "Action has been taken they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward."

College Basketball Gambling: Who Has What It Takes to Win the Big Dance Part I

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
History shows us many things about what it takes to be a champion.  I write this article every year, and in every year except for two, I have been able to identify the eventual NCAA National Champion among my elite level teams. Both exceptions were the same team – UConn – making miracle runs to win the title as prohibitive longshots.

Three years ago, Kevin Ollie’s Huskies were on the ropes in their tourney opener against St Joe’s, needing a late rally just to send the game to overtime.  Three weeks later, they cut down the nets as national champs at Jerry’s World in Arlington.  I didn’t see it coming.  Neither did the betting markets, with UConn priced in the 100:1 longshot range prior to the tournament.  And if a longshot like that wins every coinflip game in the tourney this year, I’m not likely to get it right either.

Here is a list of the last 19 NCAA champions and the teams they beat in the title game: Kentucky over Utah in ’98, UConn over Duke in ’99, Michigan St over Florida in 2000, Duke over Arizona in ’01, Maryland over Indiana in ’02, Syracuse over Kansas in Read more
