NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: San Jose Sharks at Edmonton Oilers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Jose at Edmonton -130 O/U 5
Recommendation: Edmonton

I picked the Edmonton Oilers to win this series and even after the team suffered through an embarrassing 7-0 Game 4 road loss, my opinion remains. The series is tied 2-2 and the Oilers will enjoy home ice advantage with the series now down to a best-of-three. Edmonton is 10-1 in its last 11 home games which is a track record that shouldn’t be discounted. And they will almost assuredly come out of the gate with energy following that horrendous Game 4 loss. San Jose’s durability and its energy level may be challenged the remainder of the series. The Sharks, who went went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, are an aging team. I think the longer this series goes, the edge swings toward Edmonton's youth which has been able to make San Jose look a step slow for portions of this series. It’s worth noting San Jose has a porous 2-7 road record in its last nine road games and I think they are running into a buzzsaw tonight with the Oilers looking to bounce back on home ice. I expect Edmonton to do just that and will lay the moderate price with the home chalk.

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Los Angeles Kings

Calgary +125 at Los Angeles O/U 5
Recommendation: Calgary

My clients and I have been the beneficiaries of several winning bets against the Los Angeles Kings in recent weeks and tonight looks like another solid opportunity at an equally solid price. The Kings were officially eliminated from the playoffs last weekend--an utmost disappointing result for what is a veteran laden hockey team well versed in winning and participating in the postseason. Los Angeles is on an 11-16 run and though they are coming off a victory at home against Edmonton, it was probably the Oilers worst game in weeks. Calgary still has something to play for as they look to maintain the top Wildcard position in the Western Conference. Finishing in that position instead means avoiding the conference-leading Chicago Blackhawks in the first round which is something that most teams would try to shoot for. Calgary is off back-to-back losses but have not lost three straight games since late January and they should be a highly motivated squad tonight to snap their mini funk. Los Angeles is out of the playoffs this season because they simply haven’t been good enough Read more

Winnipeg +150 at Los Angeles O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Winnipeg

My clients and I cashed a winning ticket betting against the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night in their 2-0 shutout road loss to the Edmonton Oilers. I see another opportunity for another wager against the struggling Kings tonight as they return home to face the Winnipeg Jets. Los Angeles is 1-4 in its last five games games with the only victory coming against woeful Buffalo. The Kings have been an offensively challenged team all season but their struggles to score goals have reached new lows in recent games as they’ve been held to two goals or less in five straight games and just six goals total during that span. And the Kings’ strong home record has taken a hit recently with just two wins in their last five tries. After two awful showings in Alberta against Calgary and Edmonton (outscored 7-2) earlier this week, the Kings are eight points behind the final wild card spot in the West with only 10 games left to play. Winnipeg has been on a little uptick of late with three straight wins over the NY Islanders, Minnesota and Philadelphia. Winnipeg continues to play Read more

NHL Handicapping: Targeting teams to make money on the second half of the season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As the NHL season approaches Wednesday’s trade deadline, it is time to take a look at some teams that I have targeted as “bet on” and “bet against” moving forward.

The Boston Bruins stand out as a potential “bet on” squad. Boston has enjoyed a rejuvenation of energy and team chemistry after dismissing head coach Claude Julien and handing it over to interim Bruce Cassidy. The Bruins are 6-1 since the coaching change and have scored 3+ goals in all but one of those games. Cassidy put an emphasis on wanting his team attack more offensively which explains why they over on a 4-2-1 O/U run under his watch. But while the offense has enjoyed an uptick in production, defense and goaltending that will determine just how far they go. The Bruins have an aging, slow of foot Zdeno Chara anchoring the blue line and a bunch of newcomers and youngsters on the back end. Adam McQuaid and Torrey Krug are solid defenders but this unit is still a work in progress.

The Nashville Predators have underachieved at times this season but have played their best stretch of hockey of the season with three straight wins. Their offense has been on fire of Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Anaheim Ducks at Edmonton Oilers

Edmonton +125 at Anaheim O/U 5
Recommendation: Edmonton

Pacific Division foes clash in Orange County tonight as the Anaheim Ducks host the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks return home from a brief three-game road trip where they went 1-2. They now open a five-game homestand at the Honda Center where they’ve won four of their last six. Anaheim's core trio of veteran forwards Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler have combined for 11 goals and 27 assist thus far on the year. The team however checks in at just below league average with 2.56 gpg which ranks 18th in the NHL. Edmonton is looking to recapture the energy it had early in the season as they enter this contest on a three-game skid. Despite the hiccup, the Oilers currently sit atop the Pacific Division with 19 points. Superstar Connor McDavid has been electric in creating scoring chances for his teammates. His league-leading 14 assists have made linemates Jordan Eberle (5 goals) and former Duck Patrick Maroon (6 goals) feared threats while third liners Milan Lucic and Tyler Pltlick have combined for 10 goals and 5 assists. Anaheim has won eight of the last 10 meetings but coming off a Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Dallas Stars at Arizona Coyotes

Dallas -150 at Arizona O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

Even without the services of Tyler Seguin who remains out with an Achilles tendon injury, the potent and high powered Dallas Stars offense hasn’t really suffered in recent games. Dallas has registered 13 goals in its last three games -- two of those were without Seguin on the ice. They should feast on an Arizona Coyotes squad that has not stepped up well defensively against better teams. Dallas has scored at least three goals in each of the previous meetings against Arizona and should be poised for similar production tonight. However, Arizona should be able to contribute a few goals as well. The Coyotes were shutout in back-to-back games against Tampa Bay and San Jose. After those losses, head coach Dave Tippett bemoaned his team for not working hard enough to generate enough chances and scoring opportunities and the Coyotes responded positively as they scored four goals and fired 31 shots on goal in a 4-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers last time out. Goaltending is still a bit suspect on both sides with Arizona goalie Mike Smith still working his way back into form from a recent injury and Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers

Minnesota -110 Edmonton O/U 5.5
Recommendation: See analysis

My clients and I cashed a pair of tickets with Minnesota and the over last night in its 5-3 win over Calgary and that is the same route I will take tonight as the Wild look to make it three straight wins since their coaching change. Minnesota has responded in a big way in its first two games under interim head coach John Torchetti having notched back-to-back wins over Vancouver and Calgary following a brutal 1-13 slide. They have played with a lot more energy and have been employing a more aggressive, attack minded style of hockey as they have burst out for 10 goals in their last two games. That is trouble for an Edmonton team that has struggled defensively most of the season especially of late as the Oilers have yielded 24 goals during their current 1-5 skid. It also doesn’t help that they’ve seen another defenseman go down with an injury as Eric Gryba suffered a knee injury in Edmonton’s last game against Anaheim and will be out for at least a month. That's not good for an Oilers team lacking quality depth on the blue line. This is not an optimal spot for Minnesota Read more

Edmonton +105 at New Jersey O/U 5
Recommendation: Edmonton

We cashed a winner on the Edmonton Oilers last week as a free play and tonight looks like another solid opportunity. The Oilers are in serious bounce-back mode following an ugly weekend in which they suffered back-to-back blowout losses by a combined score of 13-2 against Montreal and the NY Islanders. Edmonton got the services of Connor McDavid back following the All-Star break and his impact was immediately felt as the team notched 5-1 and 7-2 victories against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Ottawa Senators, respectively. But the roof caved in this weekend as their defensive game was non-existent in 5-1 and 8-1 defeats. Head coach Todd McLellan was not pleased after the two games during the weekend quoted as saying: “We got our butts handed to us in Montreal and we came in here and responded in a very inappropriate way, and that’s very disappointing.” I think we will see a much better effort from tonight following such a brutal two-game set. New Jersey is probably a good opponent for the Oilers’ defense to get back on track against as the Devils are Read more

Columbus at Edmonton -130 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers are rewarded with a nice “return from the All-Star Break” gift tonight with the return of their #1 overall draft pick from last year in Connor McDavid. McDavid returns for the first time since November 3rd after suffering a broken clavicle. McDavid had 12 points in 13 games before the injury and I think he’ll provide an emotional boost and also help offset the recent injury to top center Ryan Hugent-Hopkins. Columbus pulled off a two-game home-and-home sweep against the reeling Montreal Canadiens before the break but it’s still a Blue Jackets team that is currently tied with Toronto as the worst team in the Eastern Conference. It’s a beatable foe for Edmonton and even though the Jackets put two wins together, often times we do not see positive momentum prior to the break carry over. Columbus is forced to ride Joonas Korpisalo in net as both Sergei Bobrovsky and Curtis McElhinney remain out long-term due to injury. Edmonton has enough firepower to take advantage this shortcoming. It’s worth noting the Oilers’ goaltending has been Read more
