MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox

Texas (Perez) at Boston (Sale) -260 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Nine of Boston's last 10 games have gone over the total including last night's 11-6 softball score. The lone exception was last week's 3-2 loss at Oakland in which Chris Sale fanned 10 over seven innings but the bullpen coughed one up in the 10th. Sale is back on the hill tonight and we'll look for another lower scoring affair. The numbers thus far are borderline ridiculous with Sale striking out over 13 batters per nine innings. As of today, he's been the most dominant starter in MLB. And he walks into another situation tonight where we can expect stellar results. The Rangers rank in the bottom third in virtually every offensive category vs. lefties including OPS (23rd, .672). And a closer look shows they've faced a fairly soft slate of southpaw starters. When asked to step up in class against Seattle's James Paxton and Kansas City's Danny Duffy, Texas failed to plate a single run over 15.1 innings. Texas counters with Martin Perez who has shown improvement across the board this season. His strikeout rate is up, home run rate down, and over his last three starts Read more

Cleveland (Carrasco) at Cincinnati (Garrett)
Recommendation: 1st 5 UNDER 4.5

The battle for Ohio features one of the biggest over teams in MLB with the Cincinnati Reds (26-16-2 O/U) hosting the under-prone Cleveland Indians (15-23-3 O/U). I advise leaving the bullpens out of the equation this evening and focus in on the starting pitching matchup.

Carlos Carrasco, the 30-year-old Venezuelan flame thrower, has put together an All-Star caliber year with a 2.60 ERA and 0.88 WHIP. His last outing was his worst to date as he allowed five earned runs. It was also his lowest pitch count of the season and he struck out six and gave up only two line drives and four fly balls. Facing the Reds' lineup for the first time this year, he's poised for a strong start.

Opposing Carrasco is the young lefty Amir Garrett who is also coming off a down start. The 6-5 rookie faces an Indians lineup that has really struggled against lefties this year (82 WRc). Garrett has also shown to be comfortable at home with 18 strikeouts and only six earned runs over three starts.

Temps are expected to mild with wind not a factor. Couple that Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Cincinnati Reds at Chicago Cubs

Cincinnati at Chicago
Recommedation. Cincinnati Series +230

The Chicago Cubs host their division rivals the Cincinnati Reds for a three-game series starting tonight at 5pm PT in Wrigley Field. This matchup pairs the #3 and #4 teams currently in the National League Central standings, however from a betting angle the Cubs and Reds have been on opposite sides of the spectrum in terms of profit/ loss for their backers. A 13 unit separation with the Reds up +4 units YTD, as opposed by the Cubs down near the most in all of baseball at more than -9 units. The three-game series price has the Reds as over +200 underdogs and is worth a second look.

Bookmaker is posting Cinnci at +230 to win 2 of 3 in this series over the defending champs. Tonight’s pitching matchup pins Arroyo vs Lackey. Arroyo gets no respect in the betting markets and some for good reason, although he did get the win three weeks ago recording 7 strikeouts through 6 innings and only giving up 2 runs against the Cubs. He will be opposed by John Lackey who is off a great outing in Coors, but something the stats will not show is that was the second game of a Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks at Washington Nationals

Arizona (Walker) at Washington (Roark) -135 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Washington

Two of the top four most profitable teams in MLB square off tonight in our nation’s capital when the Washington Nationals host the Arizona Diamondbacks. The DBacks have enjoyed a very home friendly schedule thus far with 17 games at Chase Field and only 10 on the highway. Important to note that the 10 road games were in California meaning tonight marks the first real travel spot of the season. And they’ll do so against one of the hottest team in MLB. The Nationals currently boast the best offensive numbers in MLB, leading the league with .295/.369/.510 splits. That could spell trouble for Arizona’s Taijuan Walker who thus far has had a fairly soft slate of foes with San Diego, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Tanner Roark fits a solid profile of being tough on right handers and also flashing some incredible home splits: 2.83 ERA over 286 career innings. Roark doesn’t command as much respect in the betting markets as Scherzer and Strasburg despite the Nationals posting a 24-14 record with him on the hill dating back to last year. Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Pirates

Chicago (Hendricks) -125 at Pittsburgh (Cole) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Over

After a slow start to the season, the Chicago Cubs are the hottest hitting team in MLB. The offense has pounded out 53 runs and hit 12 home runs over its last six games. The opposing starters during that span however were all below average. The Cubs will see a more premium arm tonight in Gerrit Cole who two weeks ago tossed 6 innings and allowed only two runs against this lineup. The Cubs though made Cole work as he threw 114 pitches (19 per inning) and given their current form with the quick second look, I project they’ll be more productive at the plate this time around. Chicago’s Kyle Hendricks was pitted against Cole in that start and labored through five innings. Hendricks allowed three runs in five innings with only three strikeouts and two walks. Even more alarming is that was arguably his best outing of the season as lack of command and significantly diminished velocity have resulted in seven walks and four home runs in three starts. The previous matchup ended in a 4-2 Pittsburgh win with both bullpens combining for a near-flawless 7 innings Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Washington Nationals

St. Louis (Lynn) at Washington (Gonzalez) -135 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Washington

Promising start to the season for Washington's Gio Gonzalez who threw six scoreless innings and punched out seven batters against the Miami Marlins. No longer blessed with a plus fastball, Gonzalez has rightfully earned the rep of being all-or-nothing. He pitched far better than his 4.57 ERA last season and should continue to benefit from pitching coach Mike Maddux. Today's matchups should yield positive results as St. Louis' offensive is off to a slow start. The Cards have already been shutout twice as well as held to single run. They managed to pound around Cincinnati's Bronson Arroyo but outside of that, have produced little to no offense. That includes two games against lefty starters Jon Lester and rookie Amir Garrett in which St. Louis plated only a single run.

Lance Lynn was solid in his return from Tommy John surgery. Lynn, who missed all of 2016, allowed two runs in 5.1 IP against the Cubs. He did however throw 98 pitches and recorded only five swinging strikes. His velocity, which was a concern during spring training, was also down a Read more

MLB Handicapping: Analyzing pitchers who threw in the World Baseball Classic

04.06.2017     10:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We've been hearing mixed reports on whether or not pitchers who tossed in the WBC are more vulnerable to injuries and/or struggles. Injuries can obviously occur in spring training as well but spring training is a far more laid back and controlled environment. We've already seen two pitchers who threw in the WBC hit the shelf with New York's Seth Lugo hoping to avoid Tommy John and Drew Smyly receiving plasma injections for a bum elbow and placed on the 60-day DL. For some, throwing in WBC has had no negative impact. Minnesota's Hector Santiago said it actually helped Read more
