The college football season comes to end tonight with Georgia taking on Alabama in the National Championship in Atlanta (5 pm PT, ESPN). We've yet to see a big move on the side with the Crimson Tide opening -4 at CRIS and Pinnacle and currently -3.5 offshore and -4 in Las Vegas. According to one report, a number of large wagers were placed on Alabama at Vegas' CG Technology. The total opened 47.5 and was immediately bet under. It's since reached as high as 46.5 but was again pushed down to its current number of 45.5. According to Sports Options, 64% of the "public" is on Alabama and 61% in on the under.

Arizona Bowl Betting Preview: Utah State Aggies vs. New Mexico State Aggies

Arizona Bowl - Tucson
Utah State vs. New Mexico State
Friday, December 29, 2:30 pm PT - CBSC
CRIS Opener: Utah State -3 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Utah State -4 O/U 62
Recommendation: Over

The Arizona Bowl features a pair of Aggies with Utah State in the postseason for the sixth time in seven years taking on New Mexico State who is making its first bowl appearance since the Eisenhower Administration. NMSU head coach Doug Martin led one of the more underrated turnaround in college football this season after combining for eight victories his first three years. A big part of the turnaround was the play of senior quarterback Tyler Rodgers. The Aggies rank fourth nationally in passing yards and the Arizona native Rogers ranked second in both completions (29) and passing yards (347.7) per game. The New Mexico State defense also improved by over a touchdown per game though the unit certainly benefited from a watered down Sun Belt as five teams failed to average over 21 ppg. Camping World Betting Preview: Virginia Tech Hokies vs. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Camping World Bowl - Orlando
Virginia Tech vs. Oklahoma State
Thursday, December 28, 2:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma State -6.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -5 O/U 62
Recommendation: Oklahoma State

There’s been a fair bit of buzz in the betting markets about Oklahoma State’s late season collapse, driving concerns about the Cowboys mentality as they face Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl. For a team that had Playoff aspirations, a December 28 bowl game may not push the appropriate motivational buttons for Mike Gundy’s squad.

That being said. Oklahoma State DIDN’T collapse down the stretch, winning two out of three after their loss to Oklahoma, including a solid road win at bowl bound Iowa State. They didn’t cover a pointspread in those three ballgames, but that certainly wasn’t unusual for a team that spent most of the season as an overvalued commodity, just 2-6-1 ATS following their 3-0 start.

The Cowboys strength, all season, was their dynamic passing game. Senior QB Mason Read more

Birmingham Bowl Betting Preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. South Florida Bulls

Birmingham Bowl
Texas Tech vs. South Florida
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: South Florida -2 O/U 64.5
CRIS Current: South Florida -3 O/U 65.5
Recommendation: South Florida

On paper, there looks to be plenty of potential for points in the Birmingham Bowl with a pair of squads that rank in the top 30 in both ppg and ypg. However, with a 90% chance of rain expected, conditions could impact the amount of offense that is produced. Defensively, Texas Tech made strides this season. After allowing over 7 ypp in 2016, the Red Raiders shaved off nearly 1.5 ypp. That tied into a massive 11.7 ppg allowed improvement. But this defense still had problems, particularly against upper-tier offenses. Arizona State, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma averaged over 45 ppg against the Red Raiders. In the end, TTU’s stop unit, while no longer horrific, is still well below average. You could certainly make a case that USF is on par with those four aforementioned offenses. The key for the Bulls is balance and they have that in spades with Read more

Music City Bowl Betting Preview: Kentucky Wildcats vs. Northwestern Wildcats

Music City Bowl - Nashville, Tenn.
Kentucky vs. Northwestern
Friday, December 29, 1:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: Northwestern -7 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Northwestern -7.5 O/U 51
Recommendation: Kentucky

There is little to nothing to like about Kentucky's body of work this season. Schedule-wise, the Wildcats played in the watered down SEC East, drew both Mississippi schools from the SEC West, and were unimpressive in non-conference wins over Southern Miss, Eastern Michigan, and Eastern Kentucky. They were outgained (6.26 ypp to 5.56 ypp) and outscored by nearly a field goal per game this season. And to close the year, totally outclassed by Georgia and Louisville by a combined score of 86-20.

Meanwhile, Northwestern rallied from a 2-3 start and finished the regular season on a seven-game winning streak. None of the seven victories were "monumental" and it should be noted three came via overtime. The Wildcats were also no doubt the benefactors of a +9 turnover margin during that span. And unlike Kentucky, they closed the year strong by Read more

College Football Handicapping: Herm Edwards off to a hot start at Arizona State

12.19.2017     06:47 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Like most bettors, we're still trying to wrap our heads around Arizona State's decision to hire Herm Edwards. Long term, this has close to no chance of working out. But it's the Sun Devils' upcoming Sun Bowl Bowl matchup vs. NC State that has our attention. For whatever reason, the athletics director encouraged Edwards to keep both coordinators, which Edwards did. The only problem is they didn't stick around. Defensive coordinator Phil Bennett left for what is being called "health reasons" while offensive coordinator Billy Napier took the head job at UL-Lafayette. Shortly after, Edwards promoted wide receivers coach Rob Likens to offensive coordinator ASU's fourth OC in four years. And no one really knows who will be in charge of the defense. The only thing that can make this situation even more entertaining is if Read more

College Football Gambling: Auburn's Johnson questionable for Peach Bowl

12.15.2017     09:44 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Auburn ran the ball nearly 600 times this season which comes out to 46 attempts per game. It's a huge part of the offense and the reason why Jarrett Stidham had the best season of any Tiger quarterback since Cam Newton. But the effectiveness of the run game could be limited due to various injuries. Kamryn Pettway, who rushed for over 1,200 yards last year but was banged up for most of this season, has been ruled out. And workhorse Kerryon Johnson who missed two games and still carried the ball 263 times, is questionable after hurting his shoulder in the SEC Championship. If Johnson is unable to go, the Tigers will turn to Kam Martin who averaged over 6 ypc on 68 attempts. His season-high attempts (14) came in Week 1 vs. Georgia Southern. Auburn is currently a -9.5 favorite over UCF in the Peach Bowl.

College Football Betting Update: SMU announces GA will call plays in Frisco Bowl

12.15.2017     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly

Here's your daily "WTF is going on with this Frisco Bowl matchup" nugget. SMU's newly appointed head coach, Sonny Dykes, announced that graduate assistant G.J. Kinne will call plays.

New head coach Sonny Dykes runs an Air Raid offense, not Morris' power-spread attack, so the responsibility of calling plays falls into the hands of Kinne, who worked mostly with the offensive line during his first season at SMU.

Hicks, who is playing a large role in SMU's game-planning for the Frisco Bowl, said that he will have some freedom to make his own decisions at the line of scrimmage while Kinne monitors from above.

"He's going to be upstairs and he's going to try to script most of our plays," Hicks explained. "Then I have range to kind of do what I like to do. But he knows what I want and I
