NFL Preseason Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Orleans Saints at Cleveland Browns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans +3 at Cleveland O/U 38
Recommendation: New Orleans

Hue Jackson went 0-4 SU and ATS in his lone preseason as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Jackson followed that 0-fer up with an 0-4 SU and ATS mark in his first season with the Browns last year. Much of that was circumstantial – the Browns Week 1 roster last year had more rookies on it than any non-expansion team in NFL history.

But when we’re talking about a major steam line move – this game opened at pick em and is now painted Cleveland -3 with extra vig to support the favorite – that type of track record certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in this bettor! Whatever value their might have been with the Browns at pick em or -1 is long gone now.

Most pointspread decisions -- whether in the NFL Preseason or regular season or playoffs -- are decided after halftime. The mainstream media and the betting markets often play far too much attention to the ‘how much playing time are the starters going to get?’ announcements, as opposed to the ‘who is going to be on the field after halftime?’ Read more

NFL Gambling: New England Patriots favored in every game according to CG Technology

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
From one extreme to another, yesterday we discussed how the Cleveland Browns were underdogs in every game but one (pick 'em vs. NY Jets) according to CG Technology's early NFL lines. Here we have the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots laying points in EVERY regular season game (note that Week 17's game are not lined). Last season, the Patriots were underdogs in Week 1 to Arizona but were without the services of Tom Brady. Two weeks later, they closed a pick 'em vs. Houston (again, no Tom Brady). Overall, if you include the playoffs, New England was on average a -7 favorite. This year right at -6.5.

Week 1 - New England -7 vs. Kansas City
Week 2 - New England -4.5 at New
Week 3 - New England -9 vs. Houston
Week 4 - New England -9 vs. Carolina
Week 5 - New England -3 at Tampa Bay
Week 6 - New England -9.5 at NY Jets
Week 7 - New England -6.5 vs. Atlanta
Week 8 - New England -12 vs. LA Chargers
Week 9 - BYE
Week 10 - New England -3 at Denver
Week 11 - New England -1.5 vs. Oakland (Mexico City)
Week 12 - New England -9 vs. Miami
Week 13 - New England -7 at Buffalo

NFL Gambling: Cleveland Browns remain one of league's lowest power rated teams

05.10.2017     10:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
CG Technology recently released pointspreads on every NFL game save for Week 17. The Cleveland Browns, who last season won just a single game, are priced as underdogs all but once, a pick 'em at home vs. the New York Jets. Last season, the Browns were catching points in all 16 games; on average +6.75. Of those 16 games, they were double-digits underdogs four times. This year, none of CG's openers were higher than +9.5 and the average price of their 15 lined games is around +6.5.

Week 1 - Cleveland +9 vs. Pittsburgh
Week 2 - Cleveland +9.5 at Baltimore
Week 3 - Cleveland +9.5 at Indianapolis
Week 4 - Cleveland +3.5 vs. Cincinnati
Week 5 - Cleveland pk vs. NY Jets
Week 6 - Cleveland +9.5 at Houston
Week 7 - Cleveland +5 vs. Tennessee
Week 8 - Cleveland +7 vs. Minnesota (London)
Week 9 - BYE
Week 10 - Cleveland +8.5 at Detroit
Week 11 - Cleveland +3 vs. Jacksonville
Week 12 - Cleveland +8.5 at Cincinnati
Week 13 - Cleveland +7 at LA Chargers
Week 14 - Cleveland +9.5 vs. Green Bay
Week 15 - Cleveland +4 vs. Baltimore
Week 16 - Cleveland +4.5 at Chicago

NFL Gambling Update: Sportsbooks adjust odds following rumors of Trubisky to Cleveland

04.27.2017     08:42 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

There are a shit-ton of rumors swirling about tonight's NFL Draft. The most notable being that the Cleveland Browns may take Mitch Trubisky instead of Myles Garrett. Most draft "experts" generally agree that Garrett is the "smart" pick. But this is the Browns we're dealing with and [insert overused joke about how piss-poor the organization is]. The rumblings of Trubisky have caused a stir in the betting markets. 5Dimes moves the lines on a few of its prop bets.

Lines as of Wednesday morning
171 Myles Garrett drafted with first pick -1200
172 Any other player drafted first +600

213 Mitch Trubisky draft position over 11½ +300
214 Mitch Trubisky draft position under 11½ -420

Lines as of Thursday morning
171 Myles Garrett drafted with first pick -400
172 Any other player drafted first +280

213 Mitch Trubisky draft position over 9.5 +248
214 Mitch Trubisky draft position under 9.5 -320

A Pefect Match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

NFL Gambling: Cleveland Browns still garnering attention from bettors

12.13.2016     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Betting on a historically bad NFL team continues to be a thing.

"Every week, it's the same thing," Ed Salmons, assistant manager at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, said Sunday afternoon. "We'll write a limit bet [on the Browns] by a wiseguy right at the gun."

"It's hard to be that bad and not cover," Salmons said of the Browns. "Because the spreads get so inflated, it's really hard not to cover."

NFL Gambling Preview: Carolina Panthers at Seattle Seahawks

Carolina at Seattle
Sunday, 5:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Seattle -6.5 O/U 45
CRIS Current: Seattle -7.5 O/U 44
Recommendation: Under

Great quarterbacks can only play like great quarterbacks when they have some semblance of an offensive line to protect them.  When these two teams met twice last year, both offensive lines were in good shape.  Russell Wilson and Cam Newton had a running game that balanced their downfield passing attack.  Seattle scored 23 and 24 points in those two games, but they lost them both in SU fashion, cashing a pair of Over tickets in the process.

That was then.  This is now.  The Seahawks offensive line is in complete disarray right now.  Three rookies started on that OL last week.  They’ll be starting their fifth different combo of offensive linemen this week.  Offensive coordinator Darrel Bevell, talking about the struggles of his OL:“We are just trying to find the best five guys. If it changes every week, then it changes every week.”

Russell Wilson got sacked six times last week, but it Read more

NFL Gambling: Bettors shouldn't shy away from the Cleveland Browns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even after a winless start for the Cleveland Browns, there are several reasons to believe this team can be an under-the-radar profit producer the remainder of the season. This is a roster obviously devoid of upper-tier talent. They have a sub-par offensive line, no continuity at the quarterback position, a lack of skill position weapons, and a defense with plenty of holes at all three levels. Defensively, the Browns rank 25th of worse in total yards, passing yards, rushing yards and total points allowed per game. The team’s power rating is about as low as it possibly can be right now as most people have them right there with San Francisco as the worst team in the league. But despite the laundry list of problems, this isn’t a team to shy away from from a betting perspective.

I’m a fan of head coach Hue Jackson who with little to work with is still one of the better play designers in the NFL. He’s been able to squeeze as much as possible out of the offense by using multiple formations, pre-snap shifts and unique personnel packages. On the season, Cleveland is averaging 355 ypg which ranks a respectable 15th. Turnovers and red zone problems have kept Read more

NFL Handicapping: First-year quarterbacks continue to cover pointspreads

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For my very first weekly entry discussing the NFL from a betting perspective, I decided to focus on the success rate of first-year and/or rookie starting quarterbacks. For decades, conventional wisdom pointed toward betting against “green” quarterbacks. But there has been a paradigm shift in that regard so far in 2016. There have been six quarterbacks that have made their first ever start in the NFL: Trevor Siemian (Denver), Carson Wentz (Philadelphia), Dak Prescott (Dallas), Jimmy Garoppolo (New England), Jacoby Brissett (New England) and Cody Kessler (Cleveland). Siemien and Wentz appear to be the only two poised to be starter for the duration of the season while others are simply keeping the seat warm. Nevertheless, the collective amount of success from that group through three weeks of the season, specifically from a pointspread perspective, is impressive.

Denver, New England, and Philadelphia are all 3-0 SU/ATS. Dallas is a solid 2-1 SU/ATS. And Cleveland lost to Miami in overtime last week as +9.5 underdogs. The aforementioned group of signal callers have a combined for a 65.7% completion rate and a 15-to-3 TD-to-INT ratio (all 3 INTs via Siemian). They Read more

NFL Gambling Alert: Browns to start Kessler, Dolphins laying doubles

09.20.2016     09:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Robert Griffin III out and Josh McCown doubtful, the Cleveland Browns will turn to rookie Cody Kessler for Sunday's game at Miami. Lifetime backup Charlie Whitehurst was signed as an emergency backup. Kessler played in all four preseason games (19-of-28, 92 yards, 1 TD). The betting markets have come in strong against the Browns this week with Miami currently -10 home favorites. The Dolphins haven't been favored by double-digits since 2009. From 2003-09, Miami was a perfect 0-4 ATS in that profile.
