NFL Gambling Preview: Minnesota Vikings vs. Cleveland Browns

Minnesota vs. Cleveland (London)
Sunday, 6:30 am PT - NFL Network
CRIS Opener: Minnesota -7.5 O/U 38
CRIS Current: Minnesota -9.5 O/U 38
Recommendation: Minnesota

I’ve been impressed by Mike Zimmer and the Vikings coaching staff since they arrived in Minnesota four years ago. And the way the Vikings braintrust is approaching their trip to London this week shows exactly why this particular group of coaches and management continues to impress.

Here’s the quote from Zimmer: ‘We’re going to try something a little bit different than most of the other teams. I’ll either look smart or I’ll look dumb. We’re going to get there a day early. We’ve had sleep people come talk to us; you know we’re getting the whole gamut. I was looking into all the scientific things for this.”

Those ‘scientific things’ include limiting caffeine, using special glasses to look at their smartphones while minimizing light intake, eating a heavy meal the first night in London, and a long, detailed practice Read more

NFL Gambling Update: Cleveland's Kizer back as starter

10.20.2017     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Well, that was quick. No sooner did Cleveland rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer hit the pine, he's now back as the starter. Kevin Hogan played well in relief of Kizer against the Jets but looked very Kizer-esque (20-of-37, 3 INTs) in last week's loss to the Texans. Hue Jackson, who last week said Hogan was "best for our team", claims Kizer "is the guy right now." The Browns are +5.5/+6 home underdogs to Tennessee this Sunday.

"I'm not going to say the rest of the season, but I know he's the guy right now,'' said Jackson. "I hope he is. I hope there are no more times we have to take him out and let him reset himself.''

NFL Gambling Alert: Cleveland Browns go with Kevin Hogan vs. Houston

10.11.2017     08:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 0-5 Cleveland Browns announced quarterback Kevin Hogan will start Sunday's game at Houston in place of rookie DeShone Kizer. Hogan caught a lot of flak during his career at Stanford but played all four years, attempted over 1,110 passes, completed 66% of those passes, and posted a solid 75-to-29 TD-to-INT ratio. Meanwhile, Kizer played only two years and was notorious for struggling against better competition. Last season, in seven games against teams with a winning record, Kizer completed only 56% of his passes with a QB Rating of 124.1. Is Hogan the long term solution? Almost assuredly not. But the Browns have been able to move the ball with him under center. Following the announcement, the total was bet up from 44.5 to 47.

"I've made the decision to start Kevin this week," Jackson said in a statement. "We've liked what Kevin has been able to do within our offense when he's been in there and he will ‪start on Sunday because that's what we feel is best for our team at this point in

NFL Gambling Alert: Cleveland Browns name Kizer starting quarterback

08.23.2017     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Cleveland Browns not only named DeShone Kizer the starter for this week's preseason game but also said he'll be under center for the team's Week 1 opener vs. Pittsburgh.

“He has made a lot of progress by investing the time necessary to learn our offense, working hard to improve on his fundamentals while also effectively moving the offense in preseason games,” Jackson said. “Development is so important for a young quarterback, this is the next step he needs to take and he deserves this opportunity. We are very excited about seeing DeShone in the role of starter for this week, as he is certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season.”

NFL Preseason Handicapper Free Betting Pick: New Orleans Saints at Cleveland Browns

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Orleans +3 at Cleveland O/U 38
Recommendation: New Orleans

Hue Jackson went 0-4 SU and ATS in his lone preseason as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders. Jackson followed that 0-fer up with an 0-4 SU and ATS mark in his first season with the Browns last year. Much of that was circumstantial – the Browns Week 1 roster last year had more rookies on it than any non-expansion team in NFL history.

But when we’re talking about a major steam line move – this game opened at pick em and is now painted Cleveland -3 with extra vig to support the favorite – that type of track record certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in this bettor! Whatever value their might have been with the Browns at pick em or -1 is long gone now.

Most pointspread decisions -- whether in the NFL Preseason or regular season or playoffs -- are decided after halftime. The mainstream media and the betting markets often play far too much attention to the ‘how much playing time are the starters going to get?’ announcements, as opposed to the ‘who is going to be on the field after halftime?’ Read more

04.27.2017     08:42 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

There are a shit-ton of rumors swirling about tonight's NFL Draft. The most notable being that the Cleveland Browns may take Mitch Trubisky instead of Myles Garrett. Most draft "experts" generally agree that Garrett is the "smart" pick. But this is the Browns we're dealing with and [insert overused joke about how piss-poor the organization is]. A Pefect Match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

NFL Gambling: Cleveland Browns still garnering attention from bettors

12.13.2016     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Betting on a historically bad NFL team continues to be a thing.

"Every week, it's the same thing," Ed Salmons, assistant manager at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, said Sunday afternoon. "We'll write a limit bet [on the Browns] by a wiseguy right at the gun."

"It's hard to be that bad and not cover," Salmons said of the Browns. "Because the spreads get so inflated, it's really hard not to cover."
