College Football Betting Preview: Texas Tech Red Raiders at Houston Cougars

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas Tech at Houston
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener: Houston -5.5 O/U 69
CRIS Current: Houston -6.5 O/U 71
Recommendation: Over

Texas Tech’s offense once again looks fully capable of scoring points in bunches despite losing quarterback and 1st round draft pick Patrick Mahomes. Texas Tech’s new starter, Nic Shimonek, is the latest in a long line of plug-and-play Air Raid system signal callers. Shimonek has absolutely flawless numbers through two games; 78% completions, 927 yards passing and a perfect 9-0 TD-to-INT ratio. He’s got a slew of skill position talent to work with; WR Keke Coutee has 17 catches for 285 yards and three scores while fellow receivers Dylan Cantrell and Cameron Batson each have 12 receptions. And running backs Desmon Nisby and Justin Stockton have combined for 196 yards and 2 TDs. I expect Tech to score its share of points but so should Houston against a Texas Tech defense that still refuses to put any stock into stopping the opposition. Case in point, last week, up 42-24 in the third quarter, the Red Raiders allowed Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Tulane Green Wave at Oklahoma Sooners

Tulane at Oklahoma
Saturday, 3 pm PT
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma -34 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -35.5 O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Tulane

I cashed a winning free play here in the blog last week on the Tulane Green Wave in their spread covering loss as double-digit underdogs against Navy. I think they are worth another endorsement as they head to Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners. Tulane has opened the season 1-1 SU but more importantly 2-0 ATS. This is a squad that has taken major strides under the watch of second-year head coach Willie Fritz. The triple option offense has been firmly established and the level of execution, particularly along the offensive line, has gotten better as the Green Wave have averaged 243 ypg on the ground at a 5 ypc. They’ve also found a better quarterback this season with Jonathan Banks who with a 65% completion rate, 3 TDs and no INTs has shown the ability to throw the ball. Unfortunately, Banks was knocked out of the Navy game due to injury but Johnathan Brantley filled in admirably. The potential loss of Banks, while not ideal, Read more

College Football Betting: After two ugly losses, reeling Baylor makes switch at quarterback

09.13.2017     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With losses to Liberty, UTSA, and the Waco High School JV squad to open the season, Baylor will make a switch at quarterback with transfer Anu Solomon being replace by last year's part-time starter, Zach Smith. Smith threw for 375 yards and three touchdowns in Baylor's bowl win over Boise State the team's only win in its last nine tries. How about some +14 at Duke this weekend, bettors?

"We're going to turn to [Smith] and let him do his thing," Rhule said, making the announcement on the Big 12 coaches teleconference.

"These kids have been through a tough stretch ... They've won one of the last nine games," Rhule said. "They're looking for something good to happen."

College Football Gambling: Kansas already rethinking pass-happy, up-tempo offense

09.12.2017     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
During the offseason, Kansas head coach David Beaty brought in former TCU offensive coordinator and "friend" Doug Meacham to take the Jayhawks' offense to the next level. Meacham's offenses at TCU where nothing short of prolific thanks to top-tier talent including quarterback Trevone Boykin. He doesn't have those types of weapons in Lawrence but that didn't stop KU from chucking it up 62 times in last week's 45-27 home loss to Central Michigan. Quarterback Peyton Bender looks the part and has a big arm but also appears incapable of completing more than 55% of his passes against decent competition. In the end, Beaty basically called out Meacham and said to cool it with the past-heavy crap. Beaty has a point but he had to have known what he was getting into when he hired an "Air Raid" guy.

“We don’t want to throw the ball that much over running it,” Beaty said after praising CMU for its 35-carry, 37-pass balance, bolstered by Shane Morris’ 467-yard, five-TD passing

College Football Handicapping: Virginia Tech goes with redshirt frosh quarterback

08.15.2017     08:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech has named redshirt freshman Josh Jackson its Week 1 starter. Under first-year head coach Justin Fuente, last year's starter, Jerod Evans, broke a handful of single-season school records as the Hokies finished 10-4. Tech is currently a -4.5/-5 favorite for its season opener against West Virginia. The game will be played at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

"Day in and day out he's been more consistent in terms of the things that we've talked about, the three criteria we've talked about before this camp started, and what we are looking for. Taking care of the football, expected outcomes, and how we feel. And in those three categories we feel the best about Josh," Fuente said.

"His execution, his level of understanding the offense, his ability to get out there play after play, and do exactly what he's supposed to do and protecting the football. He showed us that that's really important to him and those factors combined altogether," added Hokies offensive coordinator Brad

College Football Betting News: Kansas hopes new OC will spark improvement

07.18.2017     08:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Recruiting at Kansas isn't easy but the Jayhawks this offseason marked perhaps the biggest score since head coach David Beaty took over with the "recruitment" of former TCU offensive coordinator Doug Meacham. Meacham has a big hand in the Horned Frogs' offense going from pedestrian to prolific. The tricky thing for Meacham will be doing it with far less talent. Kansas was one of 12 teams nationally that failed to average over 5 yards per play last season.

“I called him 10 times and offered him so much, I told him ‘look, you can have all the money, I’ll hire everyone else for a dollar,’” Beaty said on Monday, the first of two Big 12 Football Media Days in Frisco, Texas. “’You can have it all, what’s it going to take to get you here?’ Cause I just think that much of him.”

“He’s one of the best offensive minds in college football,” Beaty said. “Bringing him to Lawrence was an incredible

College Basketball Gambling: How to bet Match Madness

03.06.2017     11:58 AM     ICC     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College Basketball conference tournaments heat up this week with the power conferences getting underway. It’s the the perfect time to look at some of the key handicapping factors that can assist in bettors profiting during the postseason.

While everyone is obviously motivated during the postseason, there are situations where teams may be looking towards bigger and better things. Earning one of the four no. 1 seeds is something most teams seek but it isn’t always worth the emotional and physical drain of winning three games in three days. Then there are those teams who aren’t in the hunt for a top seed but also comfortably in the Big Dance. Their performance in the conference tournament has the ability to impact their seed but this profile is very vulnerable to upsets against lesser teams desperate for wins.

Depth and injuries is another key factor when handicapping March. Teams that make a run in the conference tournaments can play as many as four games in four days. There are going to be a handful of first round upsets in these conference tournaments and the first thing I’m looking at with the winner is how many minutes the starters Read more
