NFL Preseason Gambling: Arizona Cardinals change play callers for second straight game

08.11.2017     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Arizona Cardinals will hand over play calling duties to quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich for Sunday's game vs. Oakland. In their 20-18 Hall of Fame game loss to the Cowboys, the Cardinals scored 15 points in the first quarter and finished with 327 total yards. Offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin called plays in that contest. Arizona has taken a slew of money this week; +1 to now -3 at both offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks.

“Byron doesn’t have a ton of, or much, history calling plays but just his knowledge of the offense, his knowledge of being the guy that is hearing it through his headset is going to serve him and give him some experience.”

NFL Preseason Gambling: Dallas Cowboys a short favorite over Arizona Cardinals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL Preseason kicks off tonight with the annual Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. The Arizona Cardinals opened -1 over the Dallas Cowboys with a total of 37. So far, we've seen both Cowboys (now -1/-1.5) and under money (now 35/34.5). Arizona has been vocal that no starters will see the field. Dallas is expected to take the same approach. Four of the last five Hall of Fame games have failed to top 30 points.

2010 - Dallas 16, Cincinnati 7
2011 - No game
2012 - New Orleans 17, Arizona 10
2013 - Dallas 24, Miami 20 (24-point 4th quarter)
2014 - NY Giants 17, Buffalo 13
2015 - Minnesota 14, Pittsburgh 3
2016 - No Game

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

NFL Handicapping: Arizona's Bruce Arians calls out veterans

11.29.2016     09:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Five games, one win, zero pointspread covers is the streak for the Arizona Cardinals heading into Sunday's home game against Washington. Head coach Bruce Arians felt it time to start ruffling some feathers by calling out his veterans and hint that it may be time to play some of his younger guys.

“I’m very surprised,” Arians said, via ArizonaSports.com. “We’ve been talking about it for four weeks and the veterans obviously haven’t done anything about it, so maybe young guys will step up and make the opportunity they need.”

NFL Gambling News: New Orleans quietly cashes tickets, Arizona shows no signs of improvement

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, we discussed one team on the rise and one team on the decline and their trajectory played out as such this past Sunday. Tampa Bay won its third straight game; beating Seattle outright as +6 home underdogs. Meanwhile, Cincinnati lost yet another contest both straight up and against the spread to division rival Baltimore. This week, I’ll target two more teams that should offer good “bet on” and “bet against” opportunities in the coming weeks.

The New Orleans Saints are 5-6 but still just two games back of first place Atlanta in the NFC South. And despite that losing record, the Saints have posted a profit-producing 8-3 mark against the spread. Thanks to an 0-3 start, New Orleans has spent the better part of the season as an undervalued commodity. Quarterback Drew Brees, who had another huge game in Sunday’s blowout win against Los Angeles, is putting up MVP-type numbers. And the offense as a whole has piled up at least 20 points in all but one game. But the storyline has been the improvement of the defense. New Orleans was historically bad last season but under the watch of defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, the unit has gone Read more

NFL Gambling: Minnesota Vikings limp into Week 11 on 0-4 ATS slide

11.16.2016     10:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After one of the most impressive pointspread runs in NFL history (14 straight covers, including the preseason, dating back to last season) the Minnesota Vikings enter Sunday on an 0-4 SU/ATS slide. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner abruptly left, the team's ridiculous turnover margin cooled, and the offense still can't run the football (2.7 ypc). Head coach Mike Zimmer isn't happy and recently came out and said that "we'll get back to doing thing my way." He also hinted that various scheme adjustments simply haven't worked. The vikings are a pick 'em for Sunday's home tilt vs. Arizona.

“I’ve always said, ‘If I’m gonna lose, I’m gonna lose my way.’ So we’ll just back to doing things my way.”

NFL Gambling Update: Arizona hints Palmer will play vs. San Francisco

10.04.2016     11:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A lot of back and forth on the status of Carson Palmer for Thursday's game at San Francisco. Palmer must pass the league's concussion protocol before being cleared. Bruce Arians hints that Palmer will play but a decision won't be made until Wednesday. In the meantime, Drew Stanton is prepping to be the starter just in case. The Cardinals opened -2.5 but have been hammered up to -4.5. After facing the 49ers and Jets, Arizona plays Seattle, at Carolina, vs. San Francisco, at Minnesota, and at Atlanta.

“He got better last night and improved,” Arians said. “I talked to him last night and his wife … (but) it’s all up to the doctors.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Ranking all 32 NFL teams heading into Week 1

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL Preseason is in the rear view mirror, with Week 1 kicking off on Thursday as Carolina travels to Denver as -3 road favorites.  Here’s how I have all 32 teams ranked heading into the regular season.

1. Carolina Panthers  - Cam Newton and Carolina’s offense are poised to rank among the most potent attacks in the NFL.  Watch out for the Funchess/Benjamin WR duo!

2. Seattle Seahawks - Russell Wilson gave an MVP caliber performance in 2015, but his ability to repeat that effort could be stunted by the Seahawks offensive line woes.

3. Green Bay Packers - The Packers come out of camp with a full complement of healthy weapons for Aaron Rodgers, good news after Rodgers numbers took a big hit without Jordy Nelson last year.

4. Arizona Cardinals - Arizona returns just about every key player on both sides of the ball from a team that ranked among the NFL’s elite in 2015.

5. New England Patriots - If Tom Brady was at quarterback, this team would be ranked #1.  But with Jimmy Garappolo behind center, the Pats take a modest tumble in my rankings.

6. Kansas City Chiefs - Andy Reid’s Read more
