College Basketball Gambling Update: Syracuse defense delivers again

11.15.2017     10:28 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

So far, so really good for the Syracuse defense after holding high flying Iona to 62 points (0.93 ppp) in last night's win. The Orange dominated the glass 42-29 and blocked eight shots. The game went way under the total of 150 so it'll be interesting to see how much oddsmakers adjust with Syracuse's next three opponents -- Texas Southern, Oakland, and Toledo -- similar to Iona in terms of pace and scoring prowess.

College Basketball Handicapping: Syracuse defense should improve

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
From 2010 to 2016, Syracuse ranked between sixth and 20th nationally in defensive efficiency. Last season, the Orange took a big step back, finishing 119th and 9th in ACC play. It looks like this year's group could return to those elite-level numbers thanks to a ridiculous wealth of size and length which are obvious keys when playing a 2-3 zone. Last week, Syracuse blocked six shots and outrebounded Cornell 54-36 in an easy 77-45 win. The Orange rolled out 6-8, 6-8 6-9, 6-10, and 7-2 in that contest. Things get a little tougher tonight with Iona headed to the Carrier Dome, though the Gaels’ tallest player checks in at 6-8. Syracuse is currently -10 chalk.

College Football Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Miami Hurricanes

Notre Dame at Miami
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener: Notre Dame -2.5 O/U 56.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -3 O/U 57.5
Recommendation: Over

High stakes contest at Miami this week which has been thoroughly dissected by national media but may boil down to the simplest of factors. Hurricane detractors continue to point toward the lack of scoreboard dominance exhibited by Miami but last week’s dominant 28-10 win over Virginia Tech has opened some eyes. For the ‘Canes, the formula has not quite been classic Mark Richt style and they may be a bit ahead of schedule but they do have a head of steam built up heading into this game. The team confidence and fan base enthusiasm which have not really been clearly seen since his arrival, are now in full force at precisely the right time. Those elements combined with steady week to week play have Miami priced at a very competitive +3 home underdog versus this Notre Dame team which has been dominant this season with all eight of their victories coming by 11 or more points.

NFL Gambling Preview: Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans

Baltimore at Tennessee
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener: Tennessee -4 O/U 43
CRIS Current: Tennessee -3.5 OU 43
Recommendation: Tennessee

The betting markets didn’t pay much attention when Will Fuller was activated for the Houston Texans heading into Week 4. The 1-2 Texans had already made the switch to Deshaun Watson at QB, but they were still averaging less than 18 points per game. With their deep threat back in the lineup, the entire offense started to click, and Houston proceeded to score 57, 34, 33 and 38 in their next four ball games. Fuller wasn’t (and isn’t) the focal point of the offense – he’s only caught 13 passes in the four games since his return. But his ability to stretch the field forces opposing defenses to respect his playmaking ability, opening up the running game and the shorter routes for other receivers to take advantage of.

What does any of this have to do with this week's game? Simple – Corey Davis is expected back in the lineup for the Titans this week! Tennessee’s #1 draft choice (the #5 Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Wake Forest at Notre Dame
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener: Notre Dame -15 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -14 O/U 55
Recommendation: Notre Dame

Notre Dame continues to bury opponents as last week’s 35-14 win and cover versus North Carolina State became the seventh time in their seven victories that the Irish won 20 or more points. The ND ground game shredded NC State’s very formidable defensive front on the way to their fourth consecutive 300+ rushing effort. The offensive line for Notre Dame has undoubtedly been one of the three best in the nation and figures to be a handful for Wake Forest this Saturday. First year Offensive Coordinator Chip Long has unleashed Brian Kelly’s preferred read-option style attack which now has all the ingredients including home run threat runners QB Brandon Wimbush and RB Josh Adams. Wake Forest has seen their share of talented running quarterbacks this season including Louisville’s Lamar Jackson last week. They’ve also faces Clemson’s Kelly Bryant (was injured in third quarter of that game), Read more

College Football Betting: Clemson ready for faster offensive pace

11.01.2017     10:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following the loss of Deshaun Watson, it was logical that Clemson's offensive pace would slow. Last year, the Tigers ran over 80 plays per game and were one of the faster tempo teams in the country. This year, the Tigers have been playing it a lot closer to the vest and allowing their elite-level stop unit to win games. That philosophy eventually backfired as the offense ran only 57 plays and produced only 317 yards in their Week 7 loss to Syracuse. Last week, the offense picked up the tempo some (78 plays, 428 yards) in a 24-10 win over Georgia Tech. According to the coaching staff, with quarterback Kelly Bryant fully acclimated, the offense is ready to return to its brand of up-tempo play. Bettors should perhaps be a little bit wary of such a claim. Despite the loss to Syracuse, Clemson is still in position to reach the playoffs should they win out. Playing fast, as we know, comes with risks (turnovers, more stress on the defense), especially when you haven't done much of it. Clemson is currently a -7 road Read more

MLB World Series Handicapping: Betting public prefers underdog Astros and over for tonight's Game 7

11.01.2017     09:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Game 7 of the World Series goes tonight with the Los Angeles Dodgers (Darvish) a -155 home favorite to the Houston Astros (McCullers). Interestingly, Pinnacle opened -110 last night and it peaked at -168 before settling to the current price of -155. According to Sports Options, 58% of "public" bettors are on the Astros while 67% prefer over 7.5. From 1982 to 2011, home teams won nine straight World Series Game 7's. The last two --- San Francisco in 2014 and the Chicago Cubs in 2016 --- went to the road team.

College Football Betting Preview: Virginia Cavaliers at Pittsburgh Panthers

Virginia at Pittsburgh
Saturday, 9:30 am PT
CRIS Opener: Pittsburgh -3 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -3 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Virginia

Surprising set of results last week where these teams are concerned as Virginia’s defense was steamrolled by the Boston College offense and Pittsburgh came out of a season long fog to win outright (+8) at Duke. After owning a season long -1.5 yards per carry margin, Pittsburgh destroyed the stout Duke defense at the line of scrimmage posting a +3.0 ypc margin (5.9-2.9). The 336 rushing yards piled up by the Panthers in Durham last week was 188 more than they had gained versus any of their six previous FBS opponents which makes it tough to tell if it marked a real change or was just a mirage. Considering the fact that 171 of the 336 rushing yards came on two plays, (79- and 92-yard TD runs by RB Darrin Hall) the latter is more believable. On the other 55 carries Pittsburgh had last Saturday, they gained 165 yards for an average of 3.0 per rush which is more in line with their season numbers. Virginia however, has suddenly Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Arizona State Sun Devils

USC at Arizona State
Saturday, 7:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: USC -3 O/U 58
CRIS Current: USC -3.5 O/U 59
Recommendation: USC

Arizona State is one of the most interesting teams in college football. One one hand you have a team with three outright wins at double-digit underdogs. On the other hand, a statistical profile that is downright ugly. Despite their 4-3 overall, 3-1 PAC-12 records, the Sun Devils have been outgained by nearly a full yard per play (6.19 ypp allowed, 5.22 ypp gained) this season. And you can also make a case that a majority of ASU's opponents were later discovered to be overrated. San Diego State has recently been exposed as has Texas Tech. Since losing in Tempe, Oregon has dropped three of four; albeit with a backup quarterback. Washington was clearly living off last year's accomplishments and an ultra-soft schedule and Utah has been dealing with a lack of stability at the quarterback position. To call ASU a complete "fraud" is probably too harsh, but I have a hard time buying into this squad despite a handful of at-the-time impressive Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Old Dominion Monarchs at North Texas Mean Green

Old Dominion at North Texas
Saturday, 3:30 pm PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener: North Texas -10 O/U 66
CRIS Current: North Texas -11 O/U 61.5
Recommendation: North Texas

There is a massive class difference between these two offenses as North Texas currently leads C-USA in total offense (487.9 ypg) and yards per play (6.68). Quarterback Mason Fine has already topped the 2,000-yard mark, receivers Jalen Guyton and Michael Lawrence have 30+ catches, and running back Jeffrey Wilson is well on his way to 1,000-yard season. This is an offense that posted 6.63 yards per play against Iowa; a mark that no team not even Penn State topped against the Hawkeyes.

Old Dominion has topped 5.50 yards per play only once this season; an offense that features little to no passing game (92.8 team QB Rating) and a hit-or-miss run game (200+ yards twice, sub-100 yards three times). The Monarchs are attempting to survive Read more
